signs of lift pump failure
What are the signs of a lift pump going out? I have the Bullydog big fuel system which puts a Holley on the frame. I dont know what it is but as soon as it got cold outside my fuel pressure went from ~20 at idle to about 8-10 idle and 4-5 at 60 mph.
???

I drove it yesterday down to the store and can actually here the pump pumping when I press on the gas. It sounds like it weak or something is going out. It sounds like the pump is not lubricated or something.

hoses or pump could be touching some where transmitting noise, Have you changed your fuel filter yet? because until you do you cannot diagnoise the pump

Holy cow. Change the fuel filter and the pressure went form 5 psi to 18 psi.
dang! I need to change that more often than every 10k miles in Utah I guess, or pick a different gas station

Change it at every oil change. Keep a spare in the cab. It's only a couple bucks. A new VP is at least $1000. You do the math.

OBVIOUSLY you had a bad tank of fuel or haven't changed the filter in a long time. Do carry a spare filter and the tools necessary to change one on the side of the road. Having a FP gauge tells you when something is wrong. The price of the VP$$ isn't cheap so I like my gauge. It won't make the VP last forever but makes me feel better to know I can change the filter and get the truck running again
