The problem is, it needs a body job, the transfer case is shot, and the back seat is getting to small for the kids, the TPS is acting up, etc etc etc. Perhaps I will have to re-start this thread. I was hoping to get some opinions on how the 3rd gen diesels start in the sub zero cold of Canada or if I am better off getting a gasser. I am tired of sinking money into my worn out, beat up, too small for the kids 98

I heard the 3rd do start better not plugged in...But that's what I heard...
I've talked to a few people that have the Ford with the Ecoboost motor..Guys that have towed with them seem to really like them...
But your right Chris....How much money do you send, before it's not worth it...
If the body is falling apart ...then the frame is not far behind...And as we know...Ontario has problems with vehicles rusting fast from the high humidity..

the only reason I am inquring on 3rd is they still lack all the emission stuff that robs the fuel milage of going with a diesel in the first place lol. The pumps just went to $1.34 per litre ($5.08 U.S. gallon) for diesel so if a gasser gets even 20 mpg it will roughly the same cost

LOL, better read that again, he said -20...... But is it Canuck temp or Fahrenheit?
If it was Canuck, then she should have started, but if F, setting for a few days in the middle of nowhere, well I am not sure even Greenie would fire without full synthetics.
Personally I would go for a Westabo and not look back.

-20F (-28c) starting is hard on any diesel, really hard. I don't even try when it's that cold and my truck's not plugged in.
The trick with Wabasto's or Espars is to get them during the summer. I picked up an Espar heater complete with the bunk heater for $200 (used obviously) from a trucker this summer. Still don't have it in ye though...
But if the truck's done, it's done. The CR's are ok. Pretty good starting, decent mileage, etc. But you gotta sink a couple grand into injectors every 100k miles more or less, and they don't like those temps either... Maybe you should get a dogsled?

I'll throw my 2 cents in about the ford ego boost. Yes it will tow, but they are brutal on fuel. 7-8 mpg towing, 11 in the city empty and you might be able to get 20 out of them on the highway running empty, but there has to be no wind, no hills and only go 65 mph tops and the chances of getting 20+ mpg over a full tank of fuel is slim to non. Winter time, those numbers go down also. Plus they only have a 25 gallon fuel tank so fuel stops are very frequent. A good friend has one and I've driven it. Yes its fast and pretty torquey, but I did not like the numbness of the electric power steering and once again the fuel economy was terrible. They also sell them for full list plus. The interiors, transmission and brakes are really nice though.
They claim it can tow 11,300 yet my 3/4 ton is only rated to tow 12,600. Not sure how that math adds up.

There is a 70 cent difference in price gas vs diesel here. I figure a diesel has to get over 5 MPG better than a gasser to break even on fuel cost.
Good luck getting that out of a new one with all the emissions BS.
I like the Cummins but I wouldn't bother if I were ever in the market for a new truck. Outside of a 7.3 powerjoke or a first or second-gen I wouldn't buy another diesel.
