shelled out my 5 speed... can i replace with a 6 speed?
Towing a moderate load (maybe 12k lbs) last night with my 2000 5 speed and it said "CLANK" and then all I could do was coast to the shoulder.
Symptoms: feels like trans is stuck in a high gear. truck chokes and dies when I let the clutch out no matter where the shifter is at... nuetral included. did get it to catch a gear and jump forward about a foot before it died one time. had to tow it in with me holding the clutch the whole time.
First question - I assume the mechanic is gonna call me in a few minutes and tell me I need another tranny. Can I put a 6 speed in it? I dont think the engine is a High output.
Second question - This truck only had 230k miles on it with moderate towing only about 10 percent of its lifespan. No transmission fluid leaks that I knew of. But it has been about 140k miles since the fluid has been checked/replaced. I thought these 5 speeds would run forever? I cant find any threads about standard transmission problems, am I the oddball?
Third question - any 5th gear nut problem that I know of occurred on the earlier models... with my symptoms is this a possibility?
Thanks in advance

mine is in the shop getting my 5 speed rebuilt. my shafts were messed up too. he said the 5 speed is much easier and cheaper to work on. mine had 280k when it died.

YOu can put the 6-speed behind any Cummins engine. It doesn't need to be an HO.
You may need the transfer case also, but not sure on this.
Clutch upgrade to larger shaft.
New hydraulics to go w/ clutch upgrade if not using stocker.

+1. Unlike the 1 1/4" input shaft six speed, the five speed can be readily upgraded to a 1 3/8" input shaft. AND you can get the 13" clutch in it. That's what I'd do if it is in the budget. I'd get a clutch with the upgraded hub though as that's what failed on mine.
I'd say it didn't "wear" it broke. Go bigger!
