running in cold weather ?'s

hello, i have a few questions regarding running in cold weather and using a cold front grill cover.

i almost always plug in. makes a huge difference. but to get to full temp it takes a few miles of running. is it best to run it with a grill cover? what about over heating? i saw a similar truck to mine the other day and it had a full bra covering the bumper and grill. looked pretty nice. but how much of a difference does it make to cover the grill. i want my truck to be a happy truck. i need it to take me hunting and fishing. thanks odm

I just tried the cardboard trick earlier this week. Seems to work really good. Warms up a lot faster and coolant temp is much more consistant. Absolutely no overheating problems.

I use the Lund Cold Fronts. They work great to bring the coolant temps up much faster. I have never had an overheating problem. They would be easy to pop off if we did get a warm streak in the spring or something. Otherwise, there is plenty of air that comes through the bumper and from underneath.

I've run a Lund winter front for two years now with no overheating. If we get a freakishly warm day during the winter (happens all the time here in the Midwest) the truck might run a needle-width warmer on the gauge, still well in the normal zone.

Any of the major auto parts places such as Napa usually carry Lund products. Otherwise you could look them up on the web and find a place to buy online. You can get them in plastic (like mine) or even stainless if you are looking for some bling.

(can't believe I used the word "bling")

"bling"

i understand your concern. lol. some of my buddies use the term bling when they are talking about a banded duck or goose they shot. lol. thanks for the reply. i have never seen anything like this at the regular auto parts store. i assumed that it was something special.

Put the Lund Cold Fronts on mine this fall. LOVE them. They DO make a difference. And I drove to NJ and back with them on over Vets Day weekend without issue.
AZTrucks.com is where I got mine from. Great service and price.

Anyone know if the cradboard thing is harmful to the fan or clutch set up? I have my radiator 66% blocked off. Some guys block it 100%? Anyone with practical knowledge on the subject?

I have run all 6 Lund cold front grille covers in place all winter every winter for 4 years with no problems........I find on the really mild winter days you may have to pop the bumper cold fronts out but I leave the rest in.......the rad and the motor sure stay a lot cleaner over the course of the winter..........if anything, I would say it is easier on the rad if you are not blowing salt and dirty, slushy snow through all winter........

The trick to the cardboard 'blocker' is to cut a round hole in the center about 4-5 inches in diameter.
This allows cold air to hit the fan clutch keeping it disengaged, and prevents the fan blades from flexing/oscillating due to an off-center air flow through the radiator.
There have been occurrences of cracked/broken fan blades due to this phenomenon.
