Run away cruise control

Been having a bit of a cruise control issue......

Your rolling down the highway, set the cruise and the truck just keeps accelerating..

Will just keep going faster and faster.

Pulls like a pit bull on crack but kinda defeats the purpose of cruise....

Anyone have any ideas????

Check to see if the resuem accerate button is stuck down. That is the only easy, (cheeep) thing I can suggest.

They have a reflash for posessed cruise control??

Could it be related to the APS????

I think I need to do a reset.

(RE: my other thread check engine light)

I'm wondering if the two are related.

I have been having problems with my 99 doing that. You set the cruise at 60, and it thinks, "no that's not fast enough", so it floors it (or that's what it feels like running Mach 5's). Suddenly you're going 75+ mph, and wondering if there's a cop around. This also happens sometimes when I hit a bump.
I replaced both speed sensors, but replacing the rear one seems to have helped the most. It still jumps up about 5 mph, but that's better than 15+ mph.
I still have to try unhooking the battery for a reset to see if that helps.

I also had that cruise control thing happen to me back in '99..set it at 65 mph, and soon the countryside is a blurrrrrr..... . Brought it in for warranty and the young service manager asked if I knew how to set a cruise control Won't get into that....So they did the reflash and sent me on my way assuring me that everything would be fine Needless to say, I stopped at another Dodge 5-Star, and this time things were diagnosed and fixed correctly.....the speed control servo that is located under the drivers side battery tray was the culprit..they replaced the servo.....hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I guess that will be my next step.

Thanks,
Chris

The cruse on my truck did that since day one Since this was my first Dodge I just figured that DCs cruise sucked. When you first set it it goes to wherever it feels like ussually 10-15 over and then I just bump the coast button untill I get it back to the speed I want and for the most part it will stay close, give or take 10. After a big hill sometimes she just takes off. Its such a PITA I just dont use it anymore.

I would think it would be the servo at fault. If it was the speed sensor, the speedometer would act up too. Speedo and cruise both use the rear axle speed sensor on a 99.

They replaced the rear whell speed sensor when I bought the truck 10 months ago but that was about.... 27,000 miles ago.

Also I don't think my ABS works, (atleast I never get any thumping pedal). So that would also maybe steer me towards a Speed sensor.

The ABS light isn't on as it was when I first test drove the truck though.

Talking Update

I replaced the speed control solenoid under the battery box and it acts MUCH better now. Once I set it it stays within about 1 mph of the speed I set it at. When I go over bumps and up hills it does not overspeed.
It still surges repeatedly sometimes, but I attribute that to the computer not knowing how much HP the engine has.

I'm pretty happy now!

Thanks again to Phishngear!!

If you hit the set button while your foot is off of the go pedal, the cruise thinks there is slack in the cable and tries to compensate. you reset it by setting the cruise with the pedal depressed and then turn it off. it may take a few of these cycles to reset the cruise completly. works for me

Hmmm. That's interesting tenbrooks. I'll try and fiddle with it some more.

I see that TSB is quite old. I wonder what the difference in the 12V setup vs the 24V setup.

Mine seems to fluctutae much more that 5 MPH though.

Like I say, you set that sucker and she just starts to accelerate like you hit the propane button.

Kinda defeats the purpose of cruise. I could just set a brick on the pedal instead.

The other thought I had was what about the APS??? I thought I might have an APS issue as well as I had the truck cut to idle once while cruising through town at half throttle.
