replacing the wastegate
I have a 2002 dodge 2500 with a 5 speed. The truck is stock except for a K&N air filter. I recently have had power problems especially when I am pulling my fifth wheel. I took the truck to rocky mountain cummings. they said My Lift and transfer pump re O.K. but my wastegate is sticking. The dealer since it is still under warranty said it meets standards but is on the low end. The dealer is telliing me I cant replace just the wastegate. Is this true? I have been looking at after market wategates and i am not sure if they add on or replace the existing one. any help.

How do they know that the wastegate is sticking.Did they pressure test it? The dealer's don't know, they just replace parts. If this is under warranty I guess let them do it. I had the same problem with my truck.
The dealer wanted $1800.00. To make a long story short, I chose to replace the $100.00 MAP sensor ( which controls turbo boost) and that fixed the problem. No codes appeared when the vehicle was scanned .
All my truck has is a AMZOIL Air filter, simmular to a K&N in that you put oil on the filter element. It is possible that some oil gets past and it puts a film of oil on the MAP sensor causing it to malfunction.
I just replaced the sensor, maybe you can clean it. All you need is a 1 1/8" or 32mm deep socket. This is a 10 minute job MAX.

Dealers use, or shall I say, have access to special tool #9022 to pressure test the air inlet system. Very handy tool for checking leaking boots and when the wastegate opens.

OK, the MAP sensor reacts to changes in air pressure in the intake manifold. As the pressure changes, the MAP sensor sends voltage to the ECM changes. The ECM uses this voltage input along with info from other sensors, to make decisions regaurding engine protection, fuel control and fuel timing. If the turbo charger pressure exceeds a certain threshold, the ECM limits engine power.
If the MAP sensor is faulty, the ECM limits engine power. Some places call the MAP sensor, a (BOOST sensor) on diesel motors.
That's all I got,
