Replaced Lift Pump Yesterday

I'm very happy to report that the trucks' fuel pressure readings are now 13 @idle; 11 @cruise and 9 @wot. Previous readings were 11 @idle; 8 @cruise & 3 @wot. I removed the fuel filter cannister which made things much better for me. I have 6 torque wrenches, including 3, 1/4" drive. The only thing I could get a torque wrench on were the 2 bolts holding the cannister and that was using an extension. Even my 30-150 inch lb wrench was too long to manuver properly. Anyway, I used the old "feel" method with a wrench. Since I'm a bean counter by trade, I hope my feel was good.

My service manual indicated 18 ft lbs for the two bolts holding the cannister. The bolts have a 10mm head and at first I thought that might be a bit too much. Closer examination revealed that the bolt heads had 9.8 stamped on them and since the heads were 10mm, I assumed the bolt body size was 8mm. Since the bolts were screwed into cast iron, then 18 ft lbs is proper.

Hopefully this LP will last longer than 33k miles.

how much did you pay for your lift pump, if you don't mind me asking. I'm looking at doing that and I got a price of $425 CAD which seems quite high. I'm thinking the guy might have looked up the wrong one.
Cheers,
Ian

IAN:

Consider a NAPA pump......about half the cost of your CAD pump, and includes a one year warranty.

Glad you got it done and all is well.

How do you like your Optima Redtops? Where did you get them? I think my three year old Interstates are starting to fade, and I am looking at options.

Ian, I bought the pump ( p/n 3990105) at Cummins Southern Plains and the price was $161.76, which the parts guy told me was discounted since I buy stuff from them fairly often. The sealing washers were 83 cents each. From some of the posts that I've read, you can probably get the pump cheaper. By the way, the parts guy said the pump had a six month warranty which I thought was a bit p... poor.

Crobtex, I forgot to mention that I like the RedTops just fine. I installed them about a year ago and so far so good. I bought them at Sam's. The only issue I had during installation was the battery cable coming from the driver's side battery just barely connected to the passenger side battery. At first I didn't think it would reach. I love the fact that the batteries are still nice & clean even after a year in the Texas climate.

I bought my last one at www.hoeslidiesel.com for ~$140.
Cheapest place I found for the stock Cummins part numbered pump.
Click on the internet special button.

Now at 16 psi @ idle, 10 psi @ WOT.
(Gotta give Scotty's Smart Fuel System credit too.)

I buy most of my parts at Cummins Southern Plains in Mesquite. I've also gone to the ones in Dallas and Arlington. Pretty good place.

Are you around the Dallas area?

Yep, they are just little sliding vane pumps. The rotor and the vanes looked like new. Appears to be failing on the electrical end.

Keep the old LP?

I plan on keeping the old LP since it was still functioning to some extent. I'm wondering if I should try and completely drain all of the fuel out of it and let it dry out and then put it in a sealed bag. I don't think that I want to take it apart. Probably wouldn't get it back together right. Any suggestions?
