Replace just the Torque Converter?

Replace just the Torque Converter?
Well seeing as the problem with the CTD auto is the Torque Converter, why not just replace that? I have 100,000 miles on my rig and am considering saving up for a new tranny now. But why not just replace the TC for now? Is there any reason not to do this/
Thanks

With 100k on your current tranny, there would be some signifigant wear on the clutch packs and bands at this piont.
If you do not upgrade the valve body the only torque converter that would be any better than stock would be one with much more clutch area than the original (triple plate design).
Now say you spend $1300 dollars plus install on a new TC, and a few miles down the road the rest of the tranny goes. All that clutch material and god knows what else will be pumped into that nice new TC, ruining it!
So the short answer is no, it would be not wise to just replace the TC,, especially on a high mile tranny.

u DONT need a triple disc if u are stock or under 400 hp. a good single disc billet covered LESS EXPENSIVE one will last u another 100,000 miles, but u should at least put a performace valve body in it at the same time. should run u bout a grand for both. if tranny is in good shape id bet u have plenty of clutch lining left for another 100,000 miles.

True, you don't "need" a triple disk TC at stock power levels, but if you were running stock and the transmission was still in good health, why even replace the TC?
My take on this is if your going to pull the transmission out to replace the TC and it had 100k on it, for god sakes rebuild it. I wouldn't gamble on trying to get another 100k out of it.

I a firm beliver in if it aint broke dont fix it. yes i think it assinine to pull a healthy tranny to only put a tc in. Either pull and overhaul the whole thing, or leave it till it craps out. I have 80,000 mile on my auto, adjust bands every 25,000 miles, it still shifts like new. I would hope to get another 80-100k more outa my station car.

I too would like to change just the TorqueConverter(TC), so that I could have the benefits of a lower stall speed and not loose all that lower torque below 2300 RPM! I'm talking about the milder TC's with lower stall speed, slightly better TC-clutch and stiffer flex plate. This is supposed to help your 'city' miles-per-gallon too. I have considered ordering the TC (and maybe a valve body) to install myself. But, not if its going to fry my tranny! I have about 110,000 miles stock engine & trans, the trans has never been adjusted(yet) and it still shifts good and smooth. I mainly would just like the lower stall speed.......... Don't have the money right now for a whole new transmission. With fuel over $2.60 a gallon( X 35 gallons!) I'm not able to save up much for a trans.
Should I just live with it as is, or would a mild TC upgrade be safe??????

If you're going to keep your truck stock, leave the trans alone. Just keep up the with regular service. If you're going to add power then concider a TC/VB upgrade.
I'm running a EZ box and 275 injectors with just a VB upgrade. The trans is shifting fine with no problems. I've ordered a new TC (on it's way) and will be ordering a rebuild kit. New seals, clutch plates, steels, apply lever etc.. I figure for an extra couple of hundred $$$ might as well go thru the tranny will it's down. Piece of mind type deal, plus I've had my eye on some bigger injectors.
I swore I thought I applied an ample amount of "Bomb Bug Repellent" before entering this site. Somehow I still got bit!

My tc started slipping at 160,000 miles, when I pulled the tranny it was in very good cond. inside, it could easily went another 100k with a new tc, but since I had it out I went ahead and rebuilt it. New tc,valve body and upgrade kit, boy what a differance over stock. Never regreted spending all the $$$.

Ive been doing some research about the DDT stuff and Goerend bros stuff, and have talked to both on the phone. Ive been talking to my tranny guy also. Clutch packs can be tightened up. From what I understand these triple disk clutch TCs wear off clutch material that contaminates your oil and goes right into your coolers. Single disc is better .
My trans was overhauled at the dealer under warrenty by the preveous owner and has 25000 miles on it. It just factory stock. I have thrown the P1740 code 3 times, only in slow city driveing in traffic at low speeds when I forget to turn the over drive off. Other than that my tranny works fine except I dont like the slow hesitatin when I shift to overdrive when im driveing.
These low stall, tight torque converters sound like a good idea , But is it a marketing hipe too sell them at the big prices they want, and do they put more wear and fitigue on your trans parts??? The stock converter is low stall. Id like to drive a truck with one of these tight converters so I can see what the big hipe is...
I want to put in a shift kit and am still trying to decide what else . If I pull my trans for a "performance" TC( im still researching these TCs) I will go through the whole trans ...
