Removing turbo from manifold.

I loosened the Turbo and allowed it to hang of the truck. Only about 1" from the manifold. Had the wife make a plate that slid in the gap hung of the top 2 mounting bolts. Drilled with plate, after drilling started the truck up for a couple secs, 3-5 secs. It blew all the shavings out of the exhaust and plate blocked any of them from entering the turbo. Did that a couple months ago with no problem. Actually I think it was around Thanksgiving when I did that. Worked good.

I was working on a rig where we had to take the turbo off four times in the course of several weeks, used the same gasket each time with no leaks.

SUCCESS!
Thermocouple is installed and working just fine!
The only concern I have is one of the bolts below the turbo, towards the firewall, is in an area where it is too tight to get a socket on it, so it was impossible for me to torque it to the correct specs. Is this going to be a problem? How should I check it for torque?

I took her for a spin and got my EGT's up to 850-900 using heavy pedal (boost around 12) on a mild, but long, grade. Does this sound around normal?
I was surprized when I got back and idled her in the driveway. She cooled down to about 275*, in less than a minute! Before I installed the gauge, I was always giving her a couple of minutes to cool down ... guess the gauge has saved me time too!

i put my pyro in today, i couldnt get the bottom nut off for anything!!!!!!
so i did the greased drill bit and tap deal, then took a magnet and got most of the rest out i hope. i was not too impressed, i have been a mechanic for a long time, now i remember why i dont want to work on exhaust anymore
BTW i am getting near 1200 deg. on a heavy throttle for a half mile or so.

Please take the turbo off, it will save you a lot of headached latter on if you happen to have something go through the turbo. Here is what I did when I drill my manifold:
1) loosen the exhaust pipe on the outle of turbo (but do not remove the clamp bolt)
2) remove turbo intake tube
3)remove turbo from manifold
4) gently roll to the side (being carefull not to bend the oil lines out of shape)
5)stuff rags into the manifold side of the turbo
6)Stuff rags into the manifold
7) drill and tap manifold (The correct drill for the 1/8 NPT is not a numerical drill, use the proper "R" drill)
8) clean out all metal...if you stuff the rags right in the manifold and remove them slowly, the metal shavings will come out with it,.
9)Install Probe or Probe bushing
10)reinstall turbo (I reused the old gasket and used some antisieze on the stud threads) still not leaks 20K miles later
10) Reinstall all exhaust and intake tubes
11) Start and inspect for leaks
