Removing Oil Filter for an Oil Change?

How do you guys get the oil filter off when you change the oil? There has to be an easy way to do it. I had a hell of a time getting it off the first time I changed my own oil. Just wondering. Thanks!

take off the turbo inlet hose, and use a strap wrench from the top...

Never used a strap wrench. I'll have to look into that...

Make sure you fill the new filter before you screw it on, takes 1 qt. I got my strap wrench from Snap-On, but there are others out there, Napa, Sears, etc.

Just changed my oil yesterday, usually filter spins right off with hand pressure but not this time. No strap wrench, used hammer and cold chisel from top side of filter lip. Hammered it in a clockwise motion, worked just fine.

Sounds rough on the piece that the filter screw into. Guess you didn't have much choice once the pan was draining though, huh?

mikelr,

I think you should be going a tad past hand tight....it would definitely be a BAD thing to have a filter vibrate loose and fall off.

I use water pump pliers (really big channel-lock).
