Rearend swap

I am going to have to replace my Dana 60 pretty soon, for the 3rd time. I am thinking of going to a 70 or 80. Is a 70 a direct bolt up, or will I have to modify anything? How about going to a 80? I think my tranny is pretty harsh on the rears, and they just wear out prematurely. I am tired of collecting junk 60 rearends. If I should rebuild the 60, should I use DANA gears and the stock bearings or is the gears like the yukons, better? Thanks

A 60 in what? Don't believe a diesel ever had a 60.

Well dozer, I do have a 60, and and most 2500's I have encountered have 60's. I too thought they had 70's until I recently had to replace some bearings in the one I currently have. It seems Dodge has used both 60 & 70's in them. Back to my original questions now, thanks.

Someone has misled you then, because dodge's definitely never came with a 60 in the rear. They come with a 60 in the front, and a 70 at minimum in the rear.

They had 60s with the gassers, not the diesels.

You both are right. Quit the bickering now and get back on track.

yup dodge 2500 came with a dana 70 in the rear for an automatic and a dana 80 out back for a manual. the front is a 60 in both. if yours does have a 60 out baclk, (and i'm not saying it doesnt) then someone else switched it out. did you buy the truck new? i would guess that since they came from the factory with the 70's and 80's that they should bolt right up. the u-joints might be different. not sure on that one. good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

CMAC, let me first say thanks for your service to our great country, and Godspeed back home. We did buy the truck new. This is the 3rd rearend in the truck including the original. It is now time to change it again, or will be pretty soon. The axle I have now came out of a 99 2500 diesel 4x4. I gave the tag number to a rep at Randy's R&P, he told me it was a 99 Dana 60. I also looked it up on the Dana site, and it also comes up Dana 60 there. When searching car-parts.com, you can select which axle you want, and you will find trucks with 60,70,& 80's in them. Most all of the trucks you find listed there are diesels. In fact you find a lot more available with 60's in them, than any other axle. With that said, my original question still stands, will a 70 or SRW 80 bolt right up to the springs and such. I understand the yokes could be different.Any other differences ? Are the 2 wheel drive Danas the same as the 4X4 Danas? Thanks

believe the duallys only had the 80 but i dont see why any of them would not bolt up direct since the housings should be the same since htye are available for the same truck. if its one for a dodge truck it should bolt up direct

Is there a difference inthe 80's for a dually setup and one for a single rear wheel?

Yes there is. The spindles, hubs and bearings are different. I believe the overall length is different as well. Additionally, there were two different designs of dually axles: one for a pickup, and one for a cab & chassis. The spacing of the spring perches is different. Find yourself a model 80 out of a 2500 truck with a manual transmission, and I believe it will bolt right up.

Some people would look for a 2001.5 or 2002 axle so they could "upgrade" to rear disc brakes, but I don't see them to be any benefit over the rear drums, just higher cost and more maintenance is all.

TorqueFan I agree on the disc brakes. I tried that previously. I believe to get the max out of the disc brakes, you have to also change the master cylinder to one for disc brakes, and possibly the brake booster too, as they are different for discs compared to drum brakes. I too, am fairly satisfied with the drum brakes. I will look for an 80 as you suggest. Thanks for the info. I think I may just take a few measurements on a few trucks and just see for myself whats what.
