I always use needle nose visegrips and grab a hold of it and give it a pull.

I'm confused. Are you trying to get the drums off or the axle shaft? Because on your truck the drums are outboard and don't require the removal of the axle.

I'm trying to get both the drum off, and the axle seals off?

Ok, the drum is a snap. Jack up and block the rear. Remove the tires and thread at least one lug nut back on a stud at least 3 threads. Start the truck and put it in gear, give it a little throttle and slam on the brakes. The drum will fly off, thus the need for the lug nut.

If that fails, back the shoes off. If they have worn the drums signicantly, the lip that has formed will keep them from coming off.

Just use needle nose pliers to pull out the locking tab. 2-9/16" socket for the nut.
