Ran out of Fuel! Help ASAP!

Well, I live in a somewhat remote location in southern tennessee, and I was nowhere near a station that sells diesel on my way home, so I decided to chance it because I had diesel at my house. Well nevertheless I totally lost power about 10 miles away from my house. I hitched a ride to the gas station and put 3 gallons in it. Well It wont start now. I was going to prime the fuel system when I noticed that my pump is not making a noise when I turn on the key, or when I bump the starter. Does this mean that my pump is bad?? Why would it go bad suddenly at the same time that it runs out of fuel?? I dont get it, any suggestions????

What year is your truck? Please fill out your signature.

The IP can suck fuel if you have a weak LP, but by introducing air into the system the IP cannot suck enough fuel to purge itself.

Keep your tank at least 1/2 full.

You can try adding fuel to the fuel filter housing. There is a brass plug that will allow you to add fuel. You might get enough air out to limp home.

Are you bumping the starter when you are trying to purge the system?

Take a test light with you and if theres power to the LP it needs to be changed.
If your truck was running with low fuel and no LP I hate to say what other problems are yet to come Let us know how you make out.

Don't know why anything would be wrong w/ your pump. Best way to resart, I have found is to loosen 3 (1 at a time) injector from the head, and turn the engine over till the fuel flows and reconnect injector. With 3 flowing, keep cranking, about 20 seconds or so should bring the other 3 online, and your back running. If you think you are ever running out in the future, turn your engine off immediatley and you should be able to restart with out any problem. Good luck.

I went through this a couple months after replacing my lift pump and VP44. Turns out my sending unit on the tank is bad and I ran the truck dry... but anyway. Like ramu2 said, I ended up cracking 3 injectors, one at a time, cranked for a few seconds until fuel came out each one, the she fired right up.

All this after I paid to have it towed home...

I ran out of fuel on new years day, i know my sending unit is bad but $437 for a new fuel level sending unit is crazy, i had a buddy bring me 5 gallons, i tried cranking with no luck so then i remembered that if i bump the starter the FASS would pump fuel and hopefully get enough air out andprime the system, did this 3 times and then cranked for about 30 seconds and she started rumbling and smoking then stayed running to the next fuel station.

The dealer is trying to sell you the whole module. All you need is the sending unit, about $60.
