Just got my VP44 replaced under warranty the other day and it solved all my problems: dead pedal, no acceleration, terrible Fuel mileage. Sorry man but the P0216 code means new pump.

Just save up for it and get it done.

I reckon I'll just wait till it goes. Right now I'm running pretty normal, with only a couple of dead peddles so far. Where is a good place to get one? I've tried calling Blue Chip several times, no answer. Don't really want to go through the local dodge dealer.

You can set a 216 code when the lp does not carry enough fuel to the VP44. Doesn't necessarily mean the VP44 is dead or dying. I set the code twice within seconds of lp's that died suddenly. Installed a Holly Red inline with the third lp. 25K miles later, the VP44 is still running perfectly.

Got an update on the situation. After putting in the LP I went to the local Autozone and got the codes cleared (or so the guy told me). I'm not to sure if you can do that with an OBD II scan tool. The guy at Napa said that codes couldn't even be pulled with a OBD II on a diesel, that I had to goto a local shop and pay 65+ dollars to just see what codes were set on the computer. Anyways, I digress. I plan on going back in about a week and seeing if the 0216 code gets set again. It seems to be driving alright so far. I reckon we'll see.

Also, what is code P0380?

Hey phox, any idea what it could be? I've been looking and I can't find anything wrong. It's got me stumped.

Interesting, I thought all experience pointed torwards a starved IP fails pretty quickly on account of heat? I only had the dead pedal about 4 times before I gave up on that craps shhot and took mine to the dealer for a new LP and IP. (under warranty that decision was too easy)
Guess some are luckier than others.
There should be a code for lack of fuel delivery, not just "timing failure".

Silly question but if I want to check to see if I have any codes on my 04 can I do the key on/off 3 times trick or do I need a scanner?

Just had a dealing with the dead pedal Friday. Truck ran well without any problems Thursday night but Friday morning when I got on the interstate at 65-70 mph and it was getting hot (90* or so) I was getting a dead pedal, when the motor was in a pull. I had the cruise on at about 70 mph and it starts to slow down to about 55mph. The first time I got off on the next exit, sit a minute and took back off it was fine. Next time it done it I let off the accelerator a few times on the road and the pedal returned. I just got my fuel pressure gauge installed Saturday after the trip so I'm not sure what my pressure was when I was pulling. Load was only like 3000lbs total. My truck seems to be low on power. In town you can gun it sometimes and it has lots of power but other times it seems like it lacks some. Otherwise does fine. Fuel filter is new too. I haven't had the codes pulled yet but will. Probably the VP44 junk.
If I keep having problems like this I'm going back to a Ford. I like my Dodge cummins but I thought it would be a little more reliable than this.

Well, I just had this same thing. It gave me a dead peddle once in April, got the fuel pressure gauge in may noticed a bad LP a day later changed it out. Got the dead peadle again in June hauling the trailer, and then yesterday it was a dead peadle every time I hit the gas for almost 60 miles till I could get to a town nad get my Stepdad to come and pick up my trailer!!
I am heading straight into the Cummins shop in the AM to have the VP replaced. I hope this is all that is broke

Good Luck

Chris

Yeah I hate to go on a long trip anywhere with it acting like this. On my trip I saw another Dodge 2500 pulled over on the side of the road with his flashers on, wonder if he was having the same problems. Seems to be common, I guess. My fuel pressure is 15psi cranking, 13 psi at idle, and in between 10-11 going down the interstate at 65-70. But taking off from a stop she drops down below 8psi if you get on it. I tried to get it to do the dead pedal and see what my fuel pressure was but it wouldn't do it. I thought maybe my lift pump was causing the dead pedal but I guess its the Inj. pump getting weak and or hot.

The key thing is the amount of time an IP starves. An 0216 can be set within a minutes of fuel delivery dropping below a critical point, but if you catch it quickly, it may not be a problem. In my case, I had a gauge. One minute psi was steady at 14. Two minutes later the lp failed (check ball popped out), psi had dropped to 4, and the code appeared. I shut down the engine, replaced the lp, and got rid of the code. 7200 miles later, the same thing occurred again. Again, I shut down the engine, replaced the lp, got rid of the code, and this time mounted a Holly Red inline back at the fuel tank. Been running at 21 psi idle, 14 psi WOT ever since. VP44 now has 26K since the last 0216 was set.

Lubricity may have been a factor, too. I use plenty of additive in my fuel.
