pulled codes today, P0216!!!

This last couple of weeks I notice some slight issues with my engine;

1 - Ever so slightly sluggish at lower RPM's

2 - While idling, my tach bounces around about 15-20 RPM's up and down

And then this happened in the last two days;

1 - While cruising down the highway, went to give it some throttle and went straight to the floor, no response, let all the way up and reapplied throttle, acted normal. It has done this 2 times in the last week.

I stopped by Autozone today and had them check for codes and got two codes hits;

P0216 - Injection timing control circuit malfunction; fuel injection pump timing failure

P0380 - Intake air heater relay no. 1 control circuit malfuntion

Is is possible that a failed LP could be causing the VP44 to throw the 0216 code if it's not getting the required amount of fuel?

How do I check my lift pump and VP44 to see which one is the problem?

Your not going to be happy about the responses you get, I just went through the same symptoms. It is not just "possible" that the LP is a problem, it's Probable. Here you go.

Happy reading, there have been what seems to be a rash of these over the past few weeks.
Good luck with your truck.

Someone else who actually knows what they are talking about will chime in with instuctions on a temporary fuel gauge set up you can make to check fuel pressure.
Look up "dead pedal" in a search, most of them turn up to be 0216, Injection pump timing failure.

I just did a test on the LP, and it's bad. I opened up the steel line running from the LP to the filter housing and ran a rubber hose from it to a jug. I cycled the key to ON three seperate times. I think that it is supposed to make the LP run for thirty seconds if it's good. The first time it ran for only about 1 second then stopped. The second time it ran about 20 seconds, and the third only about 5 seconds. I called the local Cummins shop, they got a replacement for around 150 bucks so I'll pick one up in the morning. I know that this won't make the P0216 code go away, but maybe prolong total failure for awhile.

Any ideas or input would be appreciated.

I've had the code for 6 months and a dead pedal at times. It is appearing to be a heat issue.
Fix the fuel pressure and drive it. I'm at 7,000 miles since the first event.

The last couple of weeks down here have been fairly hot, 100+ if you count the heat index, and I do drive alot, so maybe that is adding to the problem.

He has a kit that will relocate your LP to the frame and get rid of all the restrictive banjo fittings, I had the same problems as you..dead pedal every now and then...well my 0216 came up a week ago after the new LP was put in a few months ago, so my new Vp came in yesterday, and i ordered his kit today, got to do what ever i can to keep this VP around for awhile. Drop him an email and he'll send ya some pics of the kit...119.00 includes shipping...real nice guy too.....

Also, try and put a heatsink on top of the pump cover. It might yield some interesting info. Doesn't cost much, you can pick one up for about $4-5.

You can totally replace the lp with a Holley fuel pump from Advanced for around $125. That what me and my roommate did, and so far so good. Its been pumping fuel for over 6 months and I can't drop the pressure below 14. Only draw back is it voids any type of warrenty.

You have to "bump" the starter to get the pump to run for 30 seconds. Turning the key "on" does not run it long enough to do a volumn test.

I pulled a P0216 the same day I installed my FASS system... 4/17/2004... 13 months later(5/23/2005), after installing an EZ.. then injectors and running about 18,000 miles, the VP-44 died. Suffered from a dead pedal a few times last July and then it started again this spring.... if you have a P0216, 9999 out of 10,000 you will be replacing a VP-44.

The FASS kept my truck running but it was running on borrowed time.

Mine went from ZERO-216 code to new VP44 in 6.7 weeks

It's running better than ever since the new pump went in.
