Power Steering/Vacuum pump leak

I am right in the middle of this http://dieselram.com/cgi-bin/ultimat...c;f=3;t=000360 and am at an impass. Wondering if I am doing something wrong. I have all four bolts/nuts off the powersteering pump but now can not for the life of me budge the VP bolts. Them **** things dont want to turn at all! You would think an area covered in oil would make it easier to loosen nuts and bolts and such, but no, not really. Any idea on how to loosen these nuts? I have been getting ahold of them with a 3/8ths driver and putting all my weight against them to no avail.

Also I suppose I should check that I am working the right ones. The two that I am talking about are on either side of the VP. One more away from the engine and the other right up next to it. Any help would be greatly apreciated right now. Its beer 30 so I will down one and come back and check.

I still have the beer! And just finnally got time to get back under the truck today. I almost have the whole thing off now. Got all the bolts out just have to convince the VP that its not bolted down anymore. Though quite honestly its too **** cold out to drink beer, its a coffee day for me.

Maybe I am just not as mechanically inclined as I would like to believe. I got the VP off but the PSP will not come off. That is where that **** seal is too, I can manuver the pump around, see the seal and all that but it has hoses on it that dont really want to come off and from the discription in the dirrections its supposed to come all the way out of the engine compartment to work on it.

I did my pump seal about 2 weeks ago & I didn't have any problems removing it. got my repair parts click here . I had the three piece vacuum pump just ordered the seal,o'ring, and mounting gasket & if I remember correctly it cost me $21.00 plus 4.00 priority mail shipping. I only had to remove the power steering mounting base from vacuum pump. he will sell only what you need as well as what is shown on the web site. real quick service.

I presume you removed the oil line and the oil pressure sender, and the power steering lines
the thing goes back together a lot easier on the bench and install as power steering/vac pump assy

Ok, so I did get it back together the last time I had posted. Everything fit nice and neat. Cranked her over and had some leakage, so I tightened some bolts and that went away. Let her warm up, figuring that it would get all the needed oil in the mechanisms and such. Jumped behind the seat and tried to turn the wheel, lots of noise and no power steering. Pushed on the breaks, same. Crawled back underneath and its leaking just forward of the PSP resivour (sp I know) just aft of the four bolts attaching it to the VP. I figure tomarrow I will take the intire thing apart again and put it back on and cross fingers. Is there something I might be missing though? Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

I took the power steering pump and vacuum pump[ off in one piece then repaired it on the bench and put it back in the truck as one unit. The 2 bolts for the vacuum pump are tem times easier to get at compared to the 4 that mount the power steering pump to the vacuum pump.

When you do it on the bench you can line them up perfectly before bolting them together.

Took me half the time to do it this way as well..

Good Luck

I mounted the VP to the PSP before mounting back to the truck and it seamed to fit together. Got all day tomarrow to get it all apart and back together again.

You just yank the hoses off the PSP reserve?

VP pump

I just got mine back in and it is holding so far.
I got the oil seal from Motion Industries, they are a national industrial parts dist, just tell them you need a 28x38x7 viton oil seal. it cost less than $2.00 but the NDA shipping was about $15.
I had the oring in my stock here at work, it is a size 229 in viton.
hope this helps others, the local dealership looked at me like i had 2 heads when i tried to get the parts from them.
good luck

No one in my area carried the Viton part, so I ended up with the Chicago Rawhide part and had to special order that no less...

Everyplaced that did business with Viton had a minimum special order of 50 bucks. I really just dont need that many seals, I least I hope I dont.

Please excuse my not knowing the terminology.

I just pulled the two pieces off and teh PSP looks like it is still sitting firmly in the middle piece and there was no scarring of any metal that I could see so say that I hadnt had the VP conected to the main gearing. Plenty of oil in there as well. I am going to split the PSP and the VP again and put them back together and put it back on and hopefully it will work this time. Is there any time line I should wait after I get it back together to test the Power Steering and breaks? How long should it take the oil to fill back up?

Side note, it freeking cold to be working outside today.

Ok, back together and this is where its leaking still.

Just this side of the PSP resivour (sp) right above that nut/bolt you can see there. I still have no power steering after warming the truck up, nor do i have vp break assist.
