Poor fuel mileage on 2003 Dodge 1 Ton SRW
We have a 2003 Dodge 1 ton quad cab, long box, Cummins 24 Valve with a 6 speed. We live in South Dakota at an elevation of 3400 feet. I have made four business trips to western Colorado (elevation of 6,000 to 8,500 feet) since November. I have found that my fuel mileage increases significantly with the higher elevation. Here in South Dakota at 3,400 feet my highway mileage is 14 to 16 MPG. At the higher elevations with the same type of driving, the mileage runs from 17 to 20 MPG.

It seems like this is in reverse. The mileage should really be better in the lower elevation since the air is denser.

I have discussed this with my Dodge dealer and they have no answers, and really don't seem to care. I have asked that they inquire of the factory and they decline to do so.

I certainly would like to figure out how to improve the MPG at the lower elevations. Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated. I am also a little gun shy of putting a power chip in until the warranty is passed.

Thanks in advance.

Dayle

The best I have gotten is 20 on the computer. The trip was mostly flat, cruised app. 60 miles perhour. General I get 14-17 with a mixture of intown and highway.

jt

Quickest way to improve fuel milage is to move the seat 2 notches to the rear.
Keep it at 2000rpm, that's where your best milage usually occurs.
You're driving an aerodynamic "Brick", above 65 mph or so your milage drops dramaticly.

The winter blend in each of those locations might be different, depending on how cold it usually gets, they might have a bit more #1 then usual.

South Dakota being a bit more north probably has more #1.

Once winter is officially over and the stations get all the winter blend out of their tanks, mileage should improve.

phox
