Pilot & or Throwout Bearing?
I think the pilot bearing needs attention on my 01.5 Within the last week I have had some problems when I try to put the NV5600 into gear.
When I have done this in the past I have used the Dodge pilot and throwout bearings. Southbend sells a pilot bearing. Is this a better option then what is available from the dealer. I have not checked with Cummins to see if those parts are not so gold plated. Are there any other recommended options?
When I do this I will probably do both bearings as this is more of a labor expense then parts.
Thanks
Stan

if i remember correctly South Bend uses a ball bearing for the pilot bearing, where factory is a needle bearing. i'd go with a ball bearing. and i'd definatley do the throw out bearing since you're already in there.

Sealed ball bearing pilot bearing
Dan, the gear man of Quad 4x4 in Montana, wrote a good article entitled something like, Catastrophic Transmission Failures in which he attributes many transmission failures to the chitty stock pilot bearings. He advocates a heavier duty pilot bearing with sealed ball bearings. Read the article at: http://quad4x4.com
Valair utilizes the heavier pilot bearing as well. It's available on their web-site for $11.00 or from NAPA for $26.29. Part No. 1635-2RS. I'll be including one in my clutch replacement!
Good Luck!

May want to check into southbends ball Bearing, I do know that my SB3250 can with a sealed ball bearing in the new flywheel but if i remember the O.D. of the ball bearing is alot larger than the stock needle bearing and will not fit the oem flywheel without some maching.

Yes, of course, the flywheel center arbor has to be machined sufficiently to accommodate the bigger pilot bearing. The local machine shop owner with whom I checked was indeed quite familiar with doing these routine upgrades. He quoted me an extra $10.00, including pressing the bearing in place. The $50.00 total machining costs for both resurfacing the flywheel together with the extra re-boring of the arbor for the new pilot bearing is still, in my humble opinion, a good savings over the ~$250.00 for a new upgraded flywheel replete with the enhanced pilot bearing!
