Is a P0216 Always Fatal
Kinda curious who has had a P O216 code without the pump failing. I know that mine threw the code when the LP failed and the engine missed. Although I never had permenant guages, I checked fuel pressure about every 3000 to 6000 miles when I changed the oil.
The P0216 hasn't returned since I had them cleared about 2000 miles ago. Truck has 115,000 miles on it and appears to be going strong. Good start, no smoke, no miss, and no hesitation except when I punch it without the turbo spun up.
Is it going to be a bad day soon, or do I have a chance.

No pretty much sums it up.
0216 does not always mean a dead/dying VP but it usually does.
Low FP can trigger 0216 just as it seems to have done for you.
Gauges man.

I just replaced mine. Had a p0216 for 2 or 3 weeks. Had dead pedal and was blowing white smoke all the normal things. Took it down and erased the codes and they came right back. I didnt drive it too much when it was doing that but when I did it would run ok for a couple days and then act up for a couple days. It justs depends on where you go and how you use it. I pull horses around alot, and into the late hours of the night(1 or 2 a.m.). And alot of times I am 2-3 hours from home. I also take my jeep out with the club and that 2-3 hours away into the mountains with weather being a big factor. I didnt trust it. There was now fun with the ideas of being stranded late at night with a load of horses in the middle of a blizzard with the truck dead and no cell service and no way too keep warm. I just changed it. There is one person on here thats been running with a code p0216 for 30000 miles waiting for it to go. My driving just doesnt allow me to do that. Use your best judgement and base your choice on your driving habits.

Mine has the code and first showed more than 3,000 miles ago.
Friday, getting on the interstate I gave it the throttle- maybe 1/2 to 5/8- and it went flat right in the traffic. Gave it more pedal and it belched and covered 2 lanes with BLACK smoke! Then she calmed down and we made it home.
It has always had a fuel pressure gauge and seldom goes below 12.
I need to start a pool as to when it will go TU.!!!
In the mean time I'm looking for the replacement, the P-7100 is too much.
Does anyone know about doing a Roosamaster swap. Like the old John Deeres-4010 + 4020 used?? When Chevy used them on the Olds 350 diesel they outlasted the motor. LOA!! Sometimes going all the way to 100,000 miles. Something the VP-44 can't do.
Yes, I'm just kidding about the swap.
But I would expect it to fail, the Roosamaster.
I thought BOSCH was above this crap.

I am the guy who is still waiting for the pump to give up the chihuahua. I am currently at about 38k on the p0216 code. The truck suffers in the morning till the temp gets up to 140-150 on the temp guage. Sometimes on the freeway I get the dead pedal syndrome where it will not accelerate, but that is quickly resolved by turning the key off and back on. I will report further when the pump totally dies, but as cgin said, it all depends on what you are willing to deal with as to when and where it will die. Down here in Houston, I am not gonna freeze to death, and I am close to many people who can give me a ride to the house when it decides to go...
Good luck,
Gary

i bought my truck at 40K with the code showing, its at 53K now and ive been driving the dog snot out of it. I drive hard, fast, and I use my truck, I've raced, had it wound to the redline when 4 wheeling in deep mud etc. I get a dead pedal every 2-3 weeks when out on the freeway...last about a minute and goes away.
I have slowly been bombing it, mods shown in the signature below. I removed the codes once and they came back...I'll try it again and see how long it takes to come back. Truck runs great tho...especially with the recently added DD3's

My pump went 30,000 miles and an year and a half after my first 0216. That was the only time I got the code until the pump finally died. The first time I got the code I plugged up a fuel filter.

My 0216 code was active for 20k before it gave up. With a VP44 it's like a roll of the dice. I have seen three failures all different. all different symptoms with the same result. It's not a matter if it will fail, It's a matter of where you will be when it fails. My last time I had just got back from a 2000 mile vacation to NM. and west Texas. It failed the next day. I'm glad I was not on the top of 13000 FT. ski apache when it died. steering and stopping is somewhat difficult without the engine running.
