Operating cost/Reliability 2nd vs 3rd gen

I've been in the market for a new/old truck. I'm looking to get a manual and 3rd gens are almost non-existent around here. I have a line on a couple to go check out, but there are a couple of stellar looking 2nd gen manuals close-by that I'm starting to consider. I have 3 kids - a search of the car-seat forums suggests this will be a bit tighter, but doable.

If I could find a nice 2nd-gen for somewhat less money than a 3rd, it would be an easier sell for the wife (after this truck is paid off, she gets a new car).

I love my 3rd gen and it's reliable and easy to work on. Would I expect the same out of a 2nd gen? Looking at some of the common parts suggests it might offer a bit cheaper ownership. Also always lots of cheap parts and accessories on craigslist as well. Looks like stuff like injectors is somewhat cheaper.

What do y'all think about the overall reliability between the two? I'm mostly looking at 2001-02 trucks. Any other insight to my situation?

Thanks all

With three kids I would stick with the crew cab model of 03 and up.

Mine still try to close the quad door at the same time as the main door and its tight in the back seat for three of them.

First of all injectors between 2nd gen and 3rd gen are WAY cheaper. Your looking at 1,500+ for a set of injectors. 2nd gens can be had for 600 or less. 2nd gens are reliable as long as they have a good lift pump and a fuel psi gauge. Front ends are so so but they can be fixed.
