Re:which oil to use

Howdy Mrdiesel, welcome to the sight.....I run 100% synthetic, AMSOIL 15w-40, with the AMSOIL filter. I've used this brand of oil for 10 years in everything from diesels to outboards with absolutely no problems.

Howdy Mr. Diesel ;D
Valvoline Premium Blue oil, and Fleetguard LF3894 oil filters.
Get filters at www.genosgarage.com, or your local Cummins parts house......not from the dealer.
Dealer pricing example-fuel filter for 24 valve Cummins-$47
at Genos or Cummins exact same filter-$14. :

Re:which oil to use

Mr. Diesel,
Everyone has their favorite oil and that's okay. I have no knowledge of an oil related failure in any 5.9 Cummins that had certified diesel oil of proper weight and timely oil changes. I do know of engine failure (multiple) because of oil filter breakdown. You will do well to use the proper Fleetguard oil filter and that will also keep your warrenty intact. Larry

Re:which oil to use

With a '99, you might want to consider using whatever the previous owner used (provided it meets proper ratings).

I concur; Fleetguard LF3894 filter is the way to go. If you can't find locally call Genos and they'll drop it on your doorstep.

Delo is my favorite Dino oil; near synthetic properties, and easy to find.

If you want to switch to synthetic, I agree, Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine is a great choice and the one I'm using. Mobil Delvac 1, 5W-40 is a great choice too. For the first two changes, I would NOT extend the change interval at all, just to give the syn oil a chance to clean out any deposits from the previous oil.

Re:which oil to use

Yeah, what those guys said about oil. I use Amsoil myself, oil and filters.
Stay away from Fram and Wix filters though. This TSB will explain:
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2001/09-004-01.htm

You should also reads this one:
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2001/09-003-01.htm

And consider them the gospel.

Chris

Re:which oil to use

I had no clue what the previous owner ran in my truck. I intially ran Rotella-T w/the Fleetguard Stratapore filter, and just recently switched to Amsoil 15W-40 using their filter. I used the Amsoil engine flush prior to putting the synthetic in, as recommended. The pour point of Amsoil is like -45 F, more fluid for those cold start ups.

Has anyone used a Mobil 1 oil filter? I'm toying with the idea of trying one. I've heard they use a synthetic filter media, have a strong case, and that it's quite efficient. They're available locally for about $12.

Re:which oil to use

Delo 400 is what I use, good stuff.
Premium blue and Rotella are also great oils.

The Fram filter along with other cheap filters have burnt up many pistons in the Cummins 5.9's, pieces from the filter media come loose and clog the little piston cooling nozzles.

So I would advise Fleetguard or Mopar brands.

--Justin

In a synthetic, you'll find the Amsoil 15W-40 is much less expensive than the 5W-30, and a number of folks seem to have equal or better oil analysis results with the 15W-40. Don't really know why some get better numbers with 5W-30 and others with 15W-40, but I would guess it has to do with the number of cold starts for each individual.
