Oil Pressure at start-up

VERY new to the CTD's and diesels in general but my new(used) 1998 2500(58,000 miles) takes 5-10 seconds for the oil pressure gauge to register....is this 'normal'?

The Check gauges light is on until the oil pressure comes up.

It does it everytime I start the truck.

Sounds pretty normal.

Low side of 5 seconds for mine, 2002.

Bothered me at first also but it is apparently normal. Everybody I've talked to says theirs is the same way.

Re:Oil Pressure at start-up

Okay I feel better

I never noticed it at first and then one morning saw the warning light telling me to check gauges.

Now I just need to sort out some other little things.

Thanks all.

Re:Oil Pressure at start-up

It might not matter, but I wait until the oil pressure registers before putting my truck into gear.

Re:Oil Pressure at start-up

This may be coincidence but I have noticed that the A/C compressor wont click on untill the oil gauge begins moving. Does yours do this. I will say that my oil gauge does take longer to move on start up than any other vehicle I have ever had but 10 seconds is a long time. And I think its strange that your check gauges light comes on at all. I would be worried about that. If your still under warranty I would have someone check to make sure you are getting an accurate reading. Good luck.

Re:Oil Pressure at start-up

Yeah, I hate to say it, but my gauge always rises within a second or two of start up. By 10 seconds it's way above 40 and steady. Never seen a check light. It's like that on my friend's CTD, too. Somebody's truck's not normal, yours or mine.

Re:Oil Pressure at start-up

Mine also take a little bit to come up. My chevy did the same thing though.

Re:Oil Pressure at start-up

Okay I timed it and it is at the most 5 seconds BUT it does seem to happen at every start-up.

Everything seems fine and hopefully it all is.

I DO have a warranty for 24 months so I guess if anything happens it will be under warranty.

Thanks for the help.
