I'm confused by something. I need to replace my oil pressure sending unit. I called cummins and they have one for much less than Dodge. However they said that once I use thiers to replace my existing one I need to have the ECM Upgraded. - Do I really? - I've also read on here that the ECM upgrade/flash just turns off the sending unit? I don't want to replace a part to have them tell the computer to ingnore. Has anyone replaced thier with the cummins part and NOT flashed/upgraded the ECM any thing to be aware of?

 

I ended up just towing the truck to the dealer and had them replace the sending unit. Don't know if they had to do anything with the computer. Less hassel, more $.

 

Why didn't you just buy the sender and replace it yourself? It is not a hard job at all, only a 5 minute job on mine.

MnTom - Same question - who'd you buy the part from - apperantly you didn't need to update the ECM. My hope is that I can use the cummins part and just change it. But need to know if I'll have to upgrade the ECM as well?

 

I was told the same thing by cummins when my oil pressure sender went bad. i finally took it to the dealer and they replaced it under the cummins engine warrenty. I was out of the 3/36 warrenty.

 

Be sure the reflash is not the one that makes a "psuedo" idiot light out of the gage. I changed mine, NO reflash, and every thing was back to normal.

 

what does the truck do when this part is bad?

 

Nothing different. You just can't tell if your oil pressure is high or low....just like an idiot light.

 

Go to Cummins and get the sender. The part number is 4088390NX
It costs around $70.00 and no reflash involved. This was for a 1999. Not sure if all the 24 valves use the same sender.

 

Is that a new number? The Cummins part number that I found was 3408428.

Do a search for a thread by me. I wrote a detailed message on all the problems I had when I needed to replace mine a year or two ago. It was on a 1999 too. I think it was called "Oil Pressure Question". I have not started many threads so it should not be hard to find. I think it will answer most of you questions.

At Cummins we only sell the replacement oil press. switch now to replace all the oil press. sensor , so for it to work , you have to rewire the switch to a one wire from the two wire previously used. and the ECM has to be recalibrated to the latest Cal. so that you wont get a CEL and fault code for oil press. switch. All the new trucks are oil press. switch now rather then a oil press. sensor. the new switch is set up to trigger a fault anytime the ECM see a press. lower then 8 p.s.i if you want to maintain the oil press. sensor... I am sure they are still available out there.

 

Guess I shouldn't have read this.....wife called yesterday with "no oil psi". Guess I'll be taking the truck to work today.

 

For whatever it's worth I have a Mopar part number 5012991AC unit and it has the number 4088390 on the part.
