The issue w/ Fram Filters was neoprene in the filter workings was degrading in the oil and bits were blocking the piston oil cooler jets. They are an old Daimler design that shoots a jet of oil up the underside of the pistons to help keep them cool under combustion. Clogged oil jet nozzles were a direct result from running Fram type filters on the Cummins over a period of time. This type of failure was not covered under the Chrysler or Cummins warranty because Fram filters are not on the A-list.
Anybody know if the NAPA filters are safe? I stated running the NAPA Gold a while back because the local Cummins guy is too cool to help out Dodge owners, Just my personal opinion...plus the Napa guys have always treated me right.

I just cut open the Fram PH3976A oil filter that I have been using on my truck and I don't see any neoprene in it at all. Just a rubber seal for the center hole.
After reading this thread and looking over the TSB I got rid of the Fram and put a Wix on it until I can get my hands on some Fleetguards. But I don't feel so bad after I cut this thing open. Heres a few pics, what do you guys think? Has Fram changed because these don't even look close to those other pics.

No doubt Fram had to address their integrity issues with their filters after the whole debacle with their filters causing engines to fail.
That being said, I still won't run one.

And here is another reason why I run an amsoil oil filter as well...
get a coffee, if you read the whole thread you might need a re-fill
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/sho...filter+cleaner
here's an old post, but it's still got some value... and for what its worth I stopped using Fram years ago.
This webpage helps to identify who makes which re-badged filter

As to my posting about the Fram, I wasn't implying that it is a top notch filter but the fact that I didn't find any neoprene in it. I won't be using them any more either.

The piston cooling nozzles aren't the only place that the material gets stuck. My buddy has a 12v, and when he would really get on it, he would get a screeching noise from his turbo. He took the oil supply line off it and found a bunch of filter material in it. He hasn't used fram since.

Little late to post this - however ~
I made a post back in November '02 describing a problem I had with my truck - "Burnt Piston" - and after digesting all of the inputs I got from members, I decided it had to be the Fram filter that caused my problem. At any rate - I use Fleetguard or WIX filters (NAPA Gold and CarQuest are WIX). I order my filters in bulk (for the tractors, swather, Roadsider, SpraCoupe, etc and my vehicles) from Filter1 <http://filter1.com> and am satisfied with their service - and filters.
