I run Napa gold and sometimes Purolators, I got tired of having to order Fleetguards. If price was not a factor and I was running long drain intervals I would go with the Amsoil filter, but at $25 a pop, plus shipping (and waiting for it) I think I will stick with the Napa gold and/or Purolators.

Maybe someone with a 3rd Gen can pipe in here, but I thought there was some discussion about not using Wix (a.k.a. NAPA) on the 3rd Gens.

I just came across the info for the K&N HP-4003 and wondered if anyone had heard of it or was using it. I didn't spend too much time on the K&N site to read about them, but I did notice they claimed to have an application for the '08's.

I haven't heard that. Wix are usually excellent filters. Napa Gold and CarQuest Premiums are just renamed Wix filters. Are you maybe thinking of Fraham filters?

WIX are a quality filter, just not the most efficient.

No, I know about the Fram filters being a known hazard to our engines. Maybe I'll do some searching so I can confirm or deny my own question.

I would stick with: Fleetguard/Mopar.
If I could not get one of those then:
Purolator, Baldwin, Napa/Wix, Motorcraft, or AC Delco.

I would not use: Amsoil, K&N, or Mobil One.

Why would you not use the best filter on the market?

Best by who's standards? Yours? Amsoil's?

The Fleetguard series of filters are what Cummins uses to test their engines with.

No other filter company can make that claim.

Who did Amsoil hire out this time to make their filter? and what Diesel engine company did they test their filter with?

Well lets see, service life is longer and the micron rating is better... hmm.... The one for the 5.9 is made by donaldson, which happens to be a great filter company... And Cummins owns fleetguard, so of course they are going to use them...

Fleetguard stratapore's are great filters, just not as good as an amsoil.

Why not Mobil One?

Mobil is an oil company, not a filter company. That means the manufacture of their filters often goes to the lowest bidder. Could be a Fram?

Documented? Well, Cummins issued a bulletin (several years back) that specifically addressed the Fram issue. The problem was pieces of the Fram filter were coming loose internally and leaving the filter itself. The end result was clogged piston cooling nozzles in the B series engine which leads to a engine failure.

This really happend, its not legend folklore, or a story.

I don't understand why people want to use such a cheap filter on such an expensive engine. Heck you can go to the dealer and pick up a Mopar (which is a Fleetguard) for around $10.

On another note:
Does anyone realize the amount of oil volume that a B series Cummins moves?
How about start up pressures when cold or pressure spikes? This engines see
upwards of 100psi of oil pressure at times and move a serious amount of oil in a short period of time.
This is not your regular ole gas engine your dealing with here.

It seems people only factor in filtration capabilities which is not what the issue with the Fram filters was about. The issue was the filter construction/material integrity itself.

Thats the standard paper fleetguard, and only filters at 35 microns, yes it has the fleetguard name, but still not a great filter. The only two filters I would regularly run are the Amsoil (15 micron) or the Fleetguard Stratapore (25 micron).

I carry WIX in my tool box for back country spares (fuel, oil, air), they are cheap so when they get beat up in the tool box I can replace them easily.
