OIL CAPACITY??

How much engine oil does my 1999 CTD hold?? Does adding an extra quart do any harm?

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

I believe it's 11 quarts (like mine). 1 in the filter, 10 in the pan, who cares what the dipstick says! ;D

Tony

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

Tony is right, it is ll quarts. You can add the extra quart, but you will end up just blowing it out of the crancase vent and making things messy underneath your truck.

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

The reason I asked the question is because of what happened today when I had my oil changed. I knew the answer but just wanted to get different opinions.

Anyway I get the truck serviced at a local authorized Cummins service dealer and I asked him why I was getting charged for 12 qts of oil the last few times I had it changed. I told him that the oil level was always above the full mark everytime that I checked it. He says that "the 24 valve engines take 12 qts". I replied that my owners manual specifies 11 qts and also the service manual confirms it.

Later while I was waiting he brings out 2 dipsticks, both from a 24 valve engine and one of them was mine. They were exactly the same lenght from tip to handle, but the "full" mark on mine was 3/4 inch lower than the other dipstick.
He said my dipstick is marked wrong and that's why its always above the full mark when I check the oil level.

I say he is wrong. If the proper amount, total of 11 qts was put in the level would read right on the full mark. Guess the question is where did he come up with the other dipstick?

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

That's pretty odd. I put 12 in one time, and got to smell it for quite a while as it got puked out

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

Your Cummins dealer may not be far off. There was a dipstick problem with the 98s. Not saying he was right about the oil though.

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/09-06-98.htm

Chris

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

mine holds 11 qts. My buddy owned a 01 and it held 12qts. He now owns the 03 HO also holds 12 qts. Both his owners manuals say 12 qts. My owners manual says 11 qts. I am going with the manual they write that in there for a reason!

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

the dipstick is supposed to to be read in the middle of the safe area on the 98.5 and the 99 they hold no more then 11 quarts the extra robs a little power by making the crank work harder by turning thru more oil .

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

I thought you don't want your crank turning through any oil. Foamy oil don't lubricate.

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

Pull your dipstick after high RPM running and if it is foamy the crank is churning up the oil causing foaming (airiation). Your oil pump with start to starve first and then your main/crank bearings shortly afterwards you will be able to tell us all what a CTD costs to rebuild. If the oil level is to high put 1 quart bottle with funnel under drain plug and loosen plug until it drips but does not come out, 3/4 to7/8 full should make it right. PK

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

I came in the house after I finished changing the oil in the Beast.
11 quarts puts the level right on the top full mark. This is including filling the filter and letting it run for a couple of minutes.
I always dump the first quart into an extra 1 quart oil bottle before refilling so I know I'm only puting 11 qts in the Cummins.

Re:OIL CAPACITY??

the 11 quarts should include the filter i believe. it should be 10 in the motor and fill the filter.

mine is around 10, anything more and it blows it out, also produces bubbles.
cummins dealer said there are two different oil pans, but does not know why.
10 (total) reads full on mine.

'00 4x4 w/ duals, 6spd, with a bunch of stuff added.

i'd love to buy a larger pan if anyone know of one.

When I change my oil and filter and put in 10/1 for a total of 11, I am still shy of reading to the "Full" line. I go by the quantity rather than the dipstick
