Oh No! P0216 code...
Let me explain myself here...
I was talking to couple of friends and showing them how easy it is to diagnose the Cummins... Well I did the key on/off trick...
P1693 - Companion Code...
P0216 - Death code of the VP44
There is no check engine light but the code is stored... Yes the bulb is good... I also did the cluster test...
I've had a LP change just a little while ago (less than a month)... My current LP has good pressure...
Starter Bump.... 15.5 PSI
Idle................... 14.0 PSI
Cruise (60 MPH) 12.5 PSI
WOT.................. 8.0 PSI
Any ideas, thoughts or theories... It worries me abit...

I don't remember there being any other possible causes besides fuel supply problems. If it still has warranty, you're ok. If not, maybe clear the code and wait for symptoms. You may have to wait for obvious symptoms for a warranty repair anyway.

Still go warranty yet...
Current Mileage is about 59K... It's covered under the 100,000 Miles warranty...
Just looking for suggestions here... I not sure if the code is old or is the computer learning of the code.
Like my Mom's truck the computer will learn about a failure before it trips the light. Like the engine miss (flash code 43 or P0306) I've been chasing on 96 Dodge... The computer will list the code but it won't trip the ligfht until the code is constant or enough hits.
I guess I should call the dealer soon huh..???

I have never had the check eng. light come on, just that lovly code "Po216" 5 TIMES NOW! Yes 5 vp lovley flippin 44's have been installed on my rig and I'm only at 79,000 miles! Good news is theres still time to put at least 2 more on before the 100K warrenty is up! ... Aftermarket here I come once the warrenty is up.

I am coming to the conclusion that fuel quality plays a big role in VP failures..... Seems like some guys loose several and others have no problems. It used to be hooking a fueling box up increased the failure rate but that was mostly on the early trucks (98.5-99).

If it's under warranty, go for it! But if not, and the thing still runs good, don't bother changing the VP. I had a 216 code come up at about 250,000 KM's, at the same time as the lift pump went dead. The dealer wanted to change the inj pump, but my pocketbook said 'no way!' Truck ran fine until the second APPS sensor went. Then there was another 216 code. This time, a different dealer, and they never mentioned a thing about the inj pump. Long story short, now at 1,074,000KM's(about 659,000 miles), and still original VP44.

This is interesting... I don't have any signs of dead pedal problems or APPS problems.
When I called the dealer I asked them if they checked for error codes when they installed the LP? Yes, the checked for codes and cleared the computer of all codes. (04/29/05)
I found the code (05/12/05). P1693 and P0216.
It surges a bit at idle cold. +/-100 RPM. A little white smoke while warming up. But it still runs good.
Still getting good boost at WOT 19.5 PSI, EGT is a bit high 850-1000*F (60-70 MPH), and fuel presure is within limits 15 PSI @ idle and 8 @ WOT.
Since the dealer is going to change it why not... There dime...

Keep me informed as to whether or not the new pump fixes your surge. I get that too, but only in colder weather. The colder it is out, the more apparant the surge. I can't figure it out, and am kinda leaning toward my pump 'mechanical' end being worn out, while the popular 'electronic' end of it is still OK.

4 hours later at the dealer and they pull my truck out with a new VP44 on it! All codes are cleared!
upersleder,
I show the tech the code on the odometer... He said that all they need to see to change out the VP44. Kinda shocked the tech when I show him that... It's like I'm not supposed to know anything about my truck?!? Thank Guys!
I would try another dealer if they won't change it. Or contact DC about it.

Mopar1973man,
This would be an excellent time to get a FASS....pull off the new LP, keep it as a spare and then throw on the FASS and youre new VP-44 should last a VERY long time..

But I think you just rubbing on the BOMB bug bite a bit more arn't you???
I'm think of getting into a fuel system like a FASS or a Holley Black/Blue, also adding high flow kit too...
Also Really wanting to get into the BHAF...
Now I got to get the truck fund back up so I can do this... Just bought a new set of shoe's for the beast... $720.00!!! (Open's wallet - moth's flying out!) Take a look at the gallery...
Thank for the suggestion Dr. Evil...
