Used to be different fuel altogether.

Offroad was higher sulphur than the onroad.

Nowadays, it is the exact same liquid.

The offroad just has the chemical dye put in it to designate it as offroad use only.

Won't hurt your engine one bit.

Might hurt your wallet if you are caught running it on the road though.

Off Road Diesel

Some Fuel dealers around here (N. Tx) still carry the high sulfur, off road diesel. Or so I've been told be Farmers/Ranchers.

In the beginning, smaller, rural fuel dealers could not afford extra storage tanks for a second type of diesel so they chose , or the govt approved, to deliver on road fuel-tax free- if it was dyed red.

I know of no engine changes from Dodge or Cummins that would cause harm from using the high sulfur, off road stuff, but like Phox said, most is not real off road fuel. Since all Mfg's of injection systems and fuel pumps have modified designs to work with Low Sulfur fuels (actually it's the lower aeromatics that caused the problems) the real off road diesel fuel is probably being phased out of production.

To answer the original question, High Sulfur Diesel had more natural lubricity in it which resulted in a lot higher emmision contaminants and soot build up in diesel engines. I suspect our CTD engines would probable run better, and dirtier, on the older diesel but the point is mute; High sulfur fuel is going the same direction as did Leaded Gasoline!

from what i've heard its a $10,000 dollar fine. but chances of getting dipped are pretty slim. The only time of i have heard of it being done is at livestock auctions and outside of a.a. callisters and western/feed stores. I guess they think the ranches are the only ones running it. The pay at the pump at harts works nice for saving about 9 bucks a fill up.

I (oops.) someone I know was running red for about a year. getting about 16.5 miles a gallon. I (oops) he changed to fuel at the pump now I'm (oops) he's getting about 17.4 miles a gallon. could be just a low grade of fuel. I(oops) he won't be running red anymore for fear of getting caught.
