My buddy has a 98 model 2wd and his rebuilt NV4500 broke last Sunday. He found a used NV4500 out of a 2001 4x4 truck in good condition. Will this tranny work by swapping on the tailshaft housing from the broken 4x2 model, or are there other differences like output shaft etc?

Tailshaft and adaptor housing must be swapped out - else same

You can use the 4X4 trans then buy a Gearvendors OD unit a little expensive but that would work also.
