noisy turbo
hey all you turbo guru's, got a question. last week i started hearing a slight high pitch buzz coming from the pass. side of truck while driving. it comes in while pulling to speed, but goes away when leveled off. pulling my 12,000 lb. trailer at 60, i'm running about 10-11 lbs of boost on level road and can easily get over 30 on a heavy pull, so i dont think i have a leak. i took off the turbo hose and checked the shaft play, no in and out play, and only slight side to side play. seems to spin freely. other than the noise, that seems to be getting louder, it works perfect. i just put in an edge juice/ att. but it was doing it before the install. sorry for the long post, i was just trying to get as much info out as possible before posting. do you think i have a problem on the way? i sure dont want the thing grenading in the engine. thanks for the help, dave.

If there is no play in shaft... and no oil in the inlet, I would not worry. Triple check for any fan blade contact with side of housing, but that should not be happening if no play!
Doubt it's a leak if boost presure is good. Alternator is on that side too - just a thought? Noise tied to engine rpm or turbo rpm?
I don't hear a real problem. Just monitor it to see if it gets worse.

Dont worry about it, its normal! and i think its pretty cool

thanks for the replys fellas, ya, i thought it might be the turbo working, but i've had the truck for 5 years and just now started hearing it. a week ago my wife could only hear it, and she pointed it out to me. a few days later, i had no trouble hearing it. you cant hear it while sitting still no matter how much you rev it, and cant hear it while driving. only when you accelerate from shifting gears. i know this is a stupid comparision, but if you ever whistled into a fan when you was a kid, thats what it sounds like. i wonder if the waste gate is acting up? this trucks sits sometimes for a few months without running. thanks again, dave.

Just a thought, check your wheel bearing. Mine went at 130k. If the sound is speed sensitive, look to the wheel. easy check is get up on the highway, shut off the engine, if the noise is still there its not from the engine or anyhting that spins when the engine is running.
