No start, 336, 602 code. Started next day
This is just a headup note when you have a no start situation.
So, I'm 20 miles out on a back road near nowhere. I go to go home and no start so I checked codes and find 336 crank position sensor fail and 602 fuel code.
After half hour of tries it still won't start. Brand new batteries.
CEL was on a few days ago but after 5 starts it went away. It's done this before and shows 336 code if you check before it self clears. It had been running fine for months.
So I see I have a new sensor and tools but now it starts lightening, thunder then down pouring rain. There is a pool of muddy water under the truck so I said no way. I called AAA for a tow. 3 hours later he shows up and scooped the truck up.
It's only a half hour job in the shop laying on the floor but flopping around in a muddy pool of water just wasnt what this 73 yr old wanted to do.
We dropped it off at the my favorite service center and the driver dropped me and my dog at home.
Somewhere a long time ago I saw where if the CEL comes on and you have 5 clean starts it self clears. It did that a few days earlier. I have been putting a new CPS in once a year in the fall so this one is only 8 months old. Today the shop called and asked what's wrong with the truck as they had started it up and drove it in the shop. They scanned it and there were no codes. I explained what happened and he said he didn't know about the 5 starts thing. So they are putting a new CPS in and I'll be on the road again. The fueling code bothers me a little but it also is usually there when the CPS fails. Apparently the ECM gets confused. Sometimes you can fix this no start by disconnecting the batteries for 15 minutes or so. I did try this but it didn't work this time. I've never had a damaged CPS so the tone ring is still ok I think.
I think the aftermarket CPS just are poor quality and getting worse. I'm getting a Cummins one for the next time.
