well, i pulled the pan this after noon and discovered broken reverse/1st brake bands in the pan.so i started to remove drive shafts and transfer case.
a question though;how do you separate the transfer case from the transmission/i removed the six nuts that hold them together,or is it easier to remove them as a unit and separate them once they are out.
i will look at it again in the morning.
thanks.

I've only done a couple but I pulled the transfer case first and then the tranny. Not so heavy that way.

Once you pull all the nuts from the transfer case and all the other connections are loose, you can wiggle it loose. I can pull it off the tail housing and handle it by myself, but be prepared as it's awkward to say the least.

Since the band is toast, plan on a new drum and 4th gear support. Although you may get lucky, you'll just have to wait until it's out.

Did this have a shift kit in it by chance? I have seen 3 other trucks with your previous symptoms, all with shift kits.

Shift kits that raise line pressure will kill L/R band especially if adjustment gets on sloppy side. Make sure the spring on L/R servo is not solid.
