no power, please help me out!!

Ok, let me tell you my situation.. I bought a 99 dodge 3500 CTD with a auto.and i use it for work, it has dump bed on the back of it.. truck total wieght is 8600#..I know that sounds like a lot, but listen to this.... When i first bought the truck, the thing would only go 63 mph, topped out,, wouldnt go any faster, and the other thing i noticed is that it will only rev to about 2600 rpm, and then it wont pull anymore.. just quits making power. well, after a couple months of getting sick and tired of no power, I bought a EDGE EZ.. I could definatley tell a difference, it then topped out at about 85 mph.. which was a big difference,, but still, it didnt want to make any power after 2600-2700 rpms. i ran the edge ez for a couple months and then my tranny went out.. so i investigated some trannys and went to wisconsin to get a full DTT tranny installed.., tranny works great, but the truck is a dog for having a edge ez, even the mechanics there said a stock cummins will walk this thing!!! I then had a EDGE PULSE put in to replace the EZ which is 90hp. well, that woke it up alittle more,, now i could hit 93 topped out,, improving, but still, no power whatsoever after 2700 rpms... it would just stop pulling.. So like myself, i said,, ok, time for more power... so i installed some DD2 injectors.. Ok, so it woke it up even more,,, no able to reach 101 topped out, but this thing just wont make any power still after 2800 rpms.... So this is my deal and i hope on of you knowledable guys on here can help me out.. i know have the EDGE PULSE, Pump wire IS installed, DD2 injectors DDT tranny, BHAF, and thats it.. I did a 0-60 mph run today and did consistant 10.5's.. i think something is really wrong here...like i said, no power after 2800rpms, and the DTT is set up to shift at 3100, so i actually have to let up on the pedal to get it to shift.. Its just not right.. thanks alot guys.. oh, and here is some info.. fuel filter was just changed. lift pump seems ok....

How's she breathin'? Check the entire intercooler plumbing from the turbocharger back, and including the cooler inself to insure you've got a good charge to the intake of the engine. Turbo OK? With all of those mods, you might want to look into a larger turbo too.

63mph stock? that would seem that it was only going up to 3rd gear before the DTT tranny. that speed stock is way too low, even for a 4.10 rear axle. as tom said, check all of the hose clamps and tighten them. do you have guages? what boost are you running? lift pump seems ok, but do you have a fuel pressure guage? how about checking the fuel screen?

just some ideas,
Tom

Re:no power, please help me out!!

The guys at the diesel shop said that with the ez I should be running no lower than 6 psi fuel pressure at WOT.. I am running right at 6. but i dont think that would cause it not to rev would it.. How would i know if i need a new lift pump?? any sensors causing this??

If you're running 6 psi under any condition you could benefit from a new lift pump. I'm not sure that is what is causing your speed problems but i think the general concensus around here is no lower than 8 psi...10+ psi is more desirable.

It doesn't sound like your fuel pressure is the problem... First thing I would do would go straight to a Cummins Dealer and get that ECM reflashed!!! Next I would get some gauges to see what our EGT's and Boost are doing.

I agree with Battering Ram, get the ECM reflashed and see what happens.

Sounds like your choked up somewhere. I'm thinking fuel and air. From what I've been told, anything below 8psi is hurting the VP44. I get 14 at WOT with teh Holley Black. I would definately look into a new Air intake. I think most around here will tell you the Scotty II is the best. My truck bone stock would hit 105. NOw it pulls to 115 on the speedo (about 120+ actual). ;D

Re:no power, please help me out!!

is there a way that a dealer around here can have my ECM reflashed??? The cummins dealer is abouit 1.5 hours from here, i dont want to drive all the way there, have them do it, and then nothing happens.. by the way, what does ECM stand for, and how can it get messed up in the first place? thanks.

Re:no power, please help me out!!

ECM stnads for Electronic Control Module. The 2nd gens (except for the HO's) were red line at 3200, so the ECM was set to begin defueling at about 2800 - 2900 rpm. I have read on this site that some of the comp boxes "fool" the ECM into allowing fueling up to the red line, but I wouldn't recommend that. Unless you are running a drag race or the Slat Flats of Nevada, anything over 85 mph on a public road is dangerous anyway, since the road surfaces aren't maintained well enough to warrant higher speeds. Just my $.02.

so do you think that a 0-60 time of about 10.5 seconds with all my mods is good?? i was really expecting better... try and give me a ballpark figure. thanks.

Re:no power, please help me out!!

ok, do you think that it could be my crank position sensor??? wouldnt there be a check engine light on though... Do you think that the reason my truck is only reving to 27-2800 rpms before losing power is because its a dump truck and wieghts about 1500 more pounds that a normal truck and it may be sensing that i had a trailer on or something???

Re:no power, please help me out!!

The original 24 valve trucks 98.5 and 99's were detuned too much to protect the trans. They had a service bulletin for people complaining of low power towing. That is the ECM reflash you are hearing about. Your truck may have never had it. You can check for it under the hood. Look for a sticker that says 18-11-99.
