No luck searching....4th/Lock Up Problem
I've been searching around for awhile looking for someone who has had the same problem as me and I could not locate anything
This is on my 01, 47re. Only mods I have are the Smarty that I just installed on Monday, TC Lock Up Switch and the tranny is stock (that I know of). Going to work today, tranny shifted normal and all was good. Coming home from work tonight I would be accelerating to 45ish, and just before the tranny shifts into lock up, you can feel it downshift for a second (Engine RPM's come up) then it will go into lock up as it should. If I accelerate reallll slow, it'll shift normally. But anything like a regular acceleration or harder, it does its little acceleration, downshift, upshift thing.Just started doing this tonight, and I have not had a chance to look up codes.
Does this sound like 3rd/4th Band Adjustment, TV Cable or internal problem? I'm going to check/clean grounds tomorrow and reset my APPS. But something tells me it might be different. Forgot to mention, once the tranny is in lock up it stays in lock up, no hunting or surging.
Thanks for any/all help, this is really frustrating

There you go. You pin pointed your own problem.
Make sure your batterys are good, clean the battery terminals shiny clean, then clean your ground connections, and seal them real well with NAPA battery and ignition sealer, part # 765-1067.
That will fix you up for along time.
Now, you have added some HP with your Smarty, and you have the lock up switch.
Be very carefull with both of those on a stock tranny, or your next problem will be much more serious. You have lit the fuse, its now up to you how long it burns before exploding. Enjoy! with moderation of course.

Thanks Guys,
I'm going out to clean grounds right now and reset APPS. I don't use my lock up switch unless I'm already in lock up on the highway, or I want it to help slow me down. Got to wait a bit before I get a Goerend Tranny,LOL.
I'll post back with the results.

So I cleaned the grounds on the firewall and PCM, cleaned the grounds on each fender (wire from each battery) and checked/cleaned the negative battery posts. Wrapped the wire leading from the alternator in tinfoil. Also did an APPS Reset and non of these have fixed the problem. I even added an extra ground wire from the battery to the PCM.
I also put my ECM back to stock, unhooked my TC Switch and re-installed the OEM Relay, adjusted the TV Cable....And it still wants to downshift quick before lock up.

I'm sorry but figure you have used up the usefull life of tranny. A flare during 3-4 shift is not likey with a sound tranny, since a overrunning clutch holds till upshift completed. A flare during lockup is probablly seal leaking during lockup efforts or a failed converter. Having fun has a price I guess.

I checked both battery terminals and even cleaned them all clean/shiny.
I didn't check to see if it would act up during cruise control. Only wires running along the firewall are Tranny Temp, which has been on there since I purchased the truck over a month ago.
Dozer, cruising along around 37 when it'll lock up in 3rd, it will lock up like normal. But with the slightest movement of the pedal it will downshift, go for a bit, lock up again, shift into 4th, hold that for a bit, then shift into lock up. It always used to go from 3rd lock up, right to 4th lock up (or overdrive, which ever).
I'm thinking of taking the truck into a tranny shop and getting it looked at for now. I would like to head down to Dave the first week of July to get a tranny done, but I don't think my stock 47re will last that long. Unless I can give him a call this weekend and get something sorted out for having one ready for one of his dealers in Michigan for a weekend.

Well I just got off the phone with Dave and so far with our talk he believes the transmission is shifting like it should. I'm going to get a scan tool on it while driving to see if the computer is telling the tranny to 3rd lock up, unlock, shift, then lock back up again.
As long as the tranny can last me until first week of July when I plan on making my way down to Dave I'll be happy, lol.

Don't forget that the torque converter normally unlocks for the 3-4 shift. This is usually the flare reported. And an aftermarket converter will almost always make this fell like a locked shift as there is much better fluid coupling.

Well I was unable to talk to Dave the end of the week or this weekend, but I thought I would share some more info with you fellas.
If I accelerate really slow, the truck goes through 1st, second, 3rd, 3rd lock up just fine. It'll then unlock and shift into 4th with a really aggressive shift. (It will flare up, unlock from 3rd, then kinda thumb into 4th). Then it'll shift into final lock up normally after about 3 seconds.
When I accelerate normally and ease off of the pedal around 45mph, it'll shift from 3rd lock up to final lock up smoothly. If I accelerate normally and don't let off, or accelerate hard it flares between between 3rd and 4th, then quickly into final lock up, which just feels (to me) hard on the transmission.
For the month I have owned the truck it always shifted smoothly from 3rd lock up to final lock up, never felt a thing. After a week went by from installing the smarty, it started having it's little shifting problem. I cleaned all grounds, battery posts, reset APPS. Voltage through APPS is .45-.47 idle to 3.50 WOT (engine off, ignition on). Tomorrow after my shift I'm going to check PCM connections, clean them, etc. Check the wiring around the alternator again and may disconnect the alternator and go for a quick drive.
I'm hoping it's not a internal PCM issue, but this shifting problem is bugging me. Granted I'm hoping to get a Goerend Tranny in July, but I don't want to have his tranny installed and then it's having the same problems.
Any help is great!! Going to try to give Dave a call also this week.

Only code present is the 1693 companion code, other than that it's clean.
I'm kinda thinking myself it might be in the transmission. Before this shifting problem started happening, while I was driving around in 3rd lock up. I would have to release my foot off the pedal to get it to unlock the TC. Right now, doesn't matter where I am in mph for 3rd lock up. As soon as I let off the go pedal a tiny bit, it unlocks...which is kinda annoying.
bigjohn, Yea that would def be nice to know someone

Well the PCM Connections are still good and clean. Tried disconnecting the alternator just for the heck of it and that did nothing.
I'm wondering if the APPS is the reason the transmission locks out of 3rd as soon as I let of the go pedal a little bit. While the engine is running, the APPS Voltage only goes to about 2.82....instead of 3.5 while the engine was off, should there be a difference?
EDIT:
Transmission has been ordered from Dave, should have installed first week of July
