new tranny or rebuild it?

A friend of mine with a 2000 auto just had his tranny give up on him, with no extra's put on the truck to help it die, so he is now in the market for either a new one or to get his re-built. What are the recommendations? We have found a couple of companies with some good looking rebuild kits but they are in the USA and by the time he pays exchange and shipping he could get a rebuilt tranny locally. Anyone now of a company with a kit in Canada pr even better, close to London Ontario? Thanks for the help.

Is there any brand/company you recommend? We have a tranny guy in town but as far as know he can rebuild them but doesnt offer new ones but we will have to check with him.
