Need help here !!!! Fuel Pedal does not respond
Hi everyone , Al here , I'm new to this site and hope that someone here can help me out.
I'm the owner of a 2002 dodge ram 3500 laramie (fully loaded) 4X4 diesel 24 valve 6 speed standard (purchased this truck new in 2002)
cruise ,air , tilt steering, heated seats etc etc...
Seems like the problem I'm having is refered to as " Dead fuel pedal"
Truck starts and idles perfectly .(Note that the orange check engine symbol comes on)
When I start to go down the road the engine bucks and does not respond to the fuel pedal. I could be going down the road a 80 km an hour and suddenly the engine will go back to an idle and will not respond even if I put the pedal to the floor. Sometimes I don't even get out of second gear and this will happen.
Sometimes the fuel pedal will respond again within seconds other times I have to pull over and shut the truck off and restart it again , only to have it re-occur within the next minute. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all.
The strangest part is , is that if I can can the truck up to 60 km an hour where I can kick in and run on the cruise control and use the accelerate and set buttons the engine will respond perfectly.Note that after running on cruise for about 5 minutes the check engine symbol in the dash will go off.
I've replaced the injector fuel pump as well as the pick up fuel pump and the problem still occurs. (I was told by the dealership that would cure the problem). Then I was told that it was an electrical problem and had a secondary computer component from under the dash replaced . This did not fix the problem either. They still insisted that it was an electrical problem and told me next to changing every wire in the truck they didn't have a clue as to why this problem occurs or what to do about fixing it.
Hope someone can give me some good input and steer me in the right direction.
Thanks again Al

P 0122 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor voltage low (APPS)
P 0460 Fuel level unit, no change over miles
P 0500 No vehicle speed sensor signal
P 1693 Companion code ECM/PCM communication
P 1694 No CCD message rec'd from ECM
P 1687 No MIC BUS message
Sounds like your APPS is going out, replace with a TIMBO. can be found online and better and cheaper than stock.
Other codes are similar to mine when the ECM went south.
Search these codes for more explanation.

Good deal. You can find a list of the diagnostic codes in one of the pages at the top of the main page to help you along.
I am hoping it is just the APPS. If you are mechanical and can follow directions, the Timbo is easy to install.
Search it on her and you will find many satisfied users and a lot of similar diagnoses of your problem.
Good Luck!

Hey SIXSLUG ,
One thing I didn't think to post here in my first post was that this re-occurring problem has been happening since the truck was new.
I now know what you mean by that APPS part it's accessed from behind the throttle linkage plate and removed easily with a torks screwdriver.
The dealer actually replaced it twice and the truck would run ok for a while then the problem would re-occur again.
They called it a fuel pedal relay switch or something along those lines.
I've had that part of myself (brought it in the house and blew dry it with the hair dryer because I figured moisture was getting into it even though it's a sealed unit, because the problem occurs more when it's cold and damp outside.)
I'm going to contact TIMBO 01 and try one of his .
Regards Al

One sure fire way to zero in on it being the apps is setting the cruise control. It will not flutter and miss as it runs from a different system.
Mine had a low grade miss at steady speeds. Setting the cruise eliminated it, so I knew it was the apps.
The other codes, however, are a mystery to me other than the low voltage one. These could all be companions to a faulty apps though.
Hint: Make sure to use the absolute correct torx on the screws. they strip easy and then you got a real headache on your hands!!

Hey Kurt,
You just confirmed what I stated in my original post on cruise it works fine .
By the way I'm no stranger to pulling wrenches use to have my own Deere backhoe , I replaced final drives and the tranny in it . I would do most of all my own maintenance .
Regards Al

Sweet. The APPS will be no problem for you then.
You may want to clean any grounds you can locate on your truck, sometimes these electrical disturbances can be cured by doing this.....just a thought.
