Need advice - Truck cuts out when cold
I am having a problem with my 1998 1/2 Cummins that has me stumped.
Truck is 100% stock, no boxes or big injectors.
When accelerating, the engine sometimes cuts out/misses with heavy white smoke. If I release the throttle and step into it again, it will run fine. If I stay in the throttle, the problem will continue until I release the throttle.
This only happens in cold weather when the truck is partially warmed-up and has only occurred when pulling onto the street from a parking lot after a period of idling. I have not had the problem occur accelerating away from a stop light. The problem has never happened on initial driving in the morning when engine is dead cold.
There is no "Check Engine" light and my code reader shows no codes.
This problem also happened last winter. I changed the crankshaft position sensor (wild guess) and the problem went away until just recently.
I have cleaned every sensor, ECM and ground connection. The found a corroded ground connection below the ECM. The truck generally runs better after doing this but I still have the problem.
Your ideas and suggestions are appreciated.
Regards,
John

Have you tried resetting the APPS?

If that doesn't solve it, you didn't mention fuel pressure, lift pump perhaps?
After that it starts to look expensive (VP44)
Oh, noticing that this is your first post, welcome to the site.

phox,
Thanks for the response.
Yes, I have reset the APPS. I have a fuel pressure gauge, 15 psi at idle, 10 at WOT after the filter.
VP-44 was replaced with a remanufactured about 18 months ago. It could still be bad, but truck runs perfectly when warmed up.
