I'm assuming you have the 16x7? Or did they offer the 16x8 on that year? Personally I wouldn't go over a 285/75/16 on the 7'' rim, I run the 315's on 8" or you could go with the 305/70/16(33x12.50/16). Roughly the same height as the 285's, just a little wider.

On a 16x8, you shouldn't go past a 315 75r16 or 305/70. A 285 is a great fit on these wheels.
on the 16x7s, I wouldn't go past a 285, but the 265 (stock size with the 16x8s) will give most even wear.

If yours is like mine ('99 4x4) with the stock chromed steel I think you are sitting on 16 X 6.5 in. wheels. If that is the case you might get some increased wear in the middle of the tires if they are too wide. As far as I know, the max. recomended tire size for that wheel is a 255/85/16. These fill up the wheel wells pretty good too as they are 33" tall.

I had the stock steel rims (16 x 6.5) installed 285's and wore out the center of the tires in about 20k. In order to get the tires to run across the entire tread I had to run them at approx. 30psi in the rear, not a good idea. With a 6.5" rim, according to most tire specs, you shouldn't go bigger than 255's.

You should be really careful with pushing the width of tires on your 8 inch rims because being able to get good tire wear will require you to run your tires at an abnormally low pressure. This not only will create bad tire roll in corners on the highway but make for some very interesting trips with that 27 foot camper trailer. I tow a 30.5 foot fifth wheel camper trailer and I chose to keep with 265's so that I didn't have to worry about any adverse conditions, that bigger tires could get me into.

This ^^ is ultimately why I will end up going with 285s instead of the 315s that I was considering before. I don't tow or anything, but with the price of the tires I want (BFG MT or Goodyear MT/R) I want to help treadwear as much as I can.
315s on a stock 16x8 CAN be done, and the tire manufacturers often list 8" as being acceptable width for that size, but it certainly is not the ideal. You ought to have a tire that size on at least a 16x9 (10", even better).
