ok, just got back from putting the truck on the scanner, here are the codes that showed up:
PO216 Inj. Pump Timing Failure
PO177 Water in fuel
PO230 transfer pump ckt out of range
PO562 charge sys. volt low
PO215 inj. pump cont. circuit
PO380 Intake air heater relay #1
PO382 Intake air heater relay #2
P1689 No com between egn ecm & inj pump
we then cleared all the codes and started the truck, immediatly a new code popped up
P1698 No ccd msg received from pcm
then a little later came
PO216 Inj pump timing failure, again
but none of the other codes came back, as of yet, the guy told me to come back tomorrow after putting some miles on the truck and he would hook it up again and see what others came back....all these codes were on the truck but no check engine light was on....please tell me what you guys think i should replace first....thanks a lot

the VP44..since you got the 0216 code again..then the I think about the computers.
have you checked the fuses? if something shorted usually this blows a fuse.
I thinking the lift pump fuse.

Likely both since you have guage trouble. The pump compute is likely bad. No way to replace it. Have to replace the whole pump. You can try which ever one is the cheapest 1st but likely will be both.

I am surprised that poor idle, white smoke and lack of power did not immediately signal a bad VP44 on this forum. Now once the codes are available I'd say, leave the computers alone and replace the VP44. It is not a cheap options but the 216 is a sure indication that VP44 is going, going, gone.

The VP44 is a computerized pump. I think that yours has worn out. The newer ones have upgraded electronics and bodies and are supposedly more reliable; if you don't tap the wire the replacement should last. All that I saw had a 1 year warranty.
I guess your next question will be, Where do I get one for the least amount of money
