Low MPG

1st time on here, so I hope I'm in the right place. I have a 2002 Dodge Ram
24v 2500 4x4 diesel. I'm the 2nd owner, and have only added a Ranch Hand style ft. bumper and 5" exhaust. I have jumped from 10 to 9.6 MPG for the last year. I pull a 16 ft enclosed trailer 80m a week during the summer cutting grass......I get the same with or with out the trailer never going over 10 MPG any Ideas how to get more, or why Im getting so little.....any help welcome thanks kyle oh yeah the truck has 96000 miles on it now

That is low. I cannot tell you why, but there are smart folks around here that can tell you. I can now get close to twice that on the highway with an 3500 automatic 4x4

Some info you can provide to help those smart people

1) If you have guages, report your
-- fuel pressure at idle and WOT
-- your boost and EGT's under a given set of conditions

2) what size tires
3) auto or stick
4) gear ratio

Here a a few things to check. Replace the fuel filter. Does the filter minder on the air box show any yellow and is it in the red zone? If it is replace the air filter. There are 8 clamps that hold the boost boots on, one by the turbo, two where it connects to the inter cooler and another before the air intake horn. They are 11mm and the torque is only 10 ft/lbs so don't tighten them too tight. Also check all four boots for cracks or holes while you're there. Then you might want to clean the Intake Air Temperature sensor. Directions for this is Here.
Try these few things and let us know if anything worked for you.

Have you tried pulling obd codes? Does it run smooth? Normal power?

Are you actually calculating your mileage by miles driven divided by gallons used, or are you going by the overhead readout?

Not trying to insult your intelligence but thought id ask because it really doesnt make sense that you get the same mileage empty as towing.

I mean if it is true you do get the same calculated mileage empty as towing then it (the problem) seems to be external to the engine, like a drivetrain problem. Transmission problem?? Something dragging.. like maybe brakes? Something like that... Im thinking transmission problem.

So you need to check for error codes, and like mentioned above you need gauges to see whats happening. If they all look normal, then it probably is in the drivetrain.

Good luck..

ive been driving until ive got 1/4 tank left and dividing miles by gal. When i let it get that low it seems to get a better read. I know i need gauges but i want to save for an edge juice display and get the best of both worlds. But with a baby on the way and firefighters the lowest on the pay scale around here who knows when that will happen thanks for the ideas

Understand.. Alot of people go to Autozone and they will check the error codes for you for free I believe.. If you find a code that will probably tell you the problem, then you will know what to do. If not I advise taking it to someone here on the forums that is in your area that is good at troubleshooting and get a hand.. It might not be something too bad after all.

Good Luck.
