Loose power- Blue smoke?????

My 2001 2500 has a BIG problem. Sometimes she's good, when I need her most she's bad. I can be cruiseing down the road...all of a sudden...dead pedal....then back up to power, may do this once a day, maybe go a week with no problems,But bet the farm, when I'm pullin my gooseneck loaded thru the hills of Kentucky, she'll act up. Sometimes if I pull over when it does it, she blow's out heavy blue smoke,(That ain't right for a diesel) then she'll power back up untill I pull out in front of that 18 Wheeler an lay down again. I'm hopeing this is not the pump, but just bet it is. Any good news...or all bad??

1st post, welcome to the forums.

Ya, sounds like your VP44 isn't long for this world.

Blue smoke from a warm engine is a sign the timing has slipped.
Since the timing is all electronic, VP44 is heading out.

If I had to guess, I'd say your lift pump has been dead for a while, and the VP44 has been sucking it's own fuel, and getting quite toasty.

Once you get them both replaced, invest in a fuel pressure guage, that way you'll know when your lift pump is dying next time, and can fix it before it takes out the VP44 again.

Yeah, I'm afraid phox is right. Sounds about along the lines how Blue Chip explains VP44 failure.

Thanks for the quick responce!! Kinda figured that is what was going on, but was in denial! Now, lift pump and VP44...two different things correct? I'm used to calling them injection pumps, that is the same thing right? Anyone have a picture, and maybe the best place to buy one....I mean cheapest place. Thanks for all the help!!!!

Best deal I could find was from Midwest Injection.
Here's their website: http://www.mwfi.com/VP44.htm
Had it overnighted this past Monday, delivered on Tuesday and installed by Tueseday early afternoon.

Lift pump pulls the Diesel from the tank and delivers it to the VP44.
It not only supplies the fuel for injection, but extra fuel for lubrication and cooling of the VP44.
The lift pump is low pressure, 15 psi or thereabouts.

VP44 is the injection pump, very very high pressure fuel right to the injectors.
