Looking at new clutch...have some questions
I want to get a new clutch for my '01. I am looking at the SouthBend DD3250. I am going to replace the rear crank seal and I am thinking of upgrading to the HD hydraulics as well. This truck is used for towing and a little play. I am looking for a final HP number of around 500 to 600 (someday). I want to get the clutch done before I start slipping the stocker.
With all that in mind do I need to do the upgraded input shaft? Also should I upgrade the hydraulics? What does that do for me? Thanks for any information.

If its a 6 speed you should have the larger shaft.
Upgrade the hydraulics now with the new clutch. THey are designed for the unit and can handle the extra stress. Many who don't have ended up needing to and its a nice unit.
When I called Southbend they were very professional and helpful. I would say you could trust their suggestions per your application rather than getting upsold something you'll never need.

They might have, but I have an '01 not an 01.5. I guess I am just curious if the larger shaft is needed for what I plan to do. When do you and when do you not upgrade to the larger input shaft?

If it were me, I would do the upgrade while I was at it.
They bumped it up when they went to the HO for a reason, and that isn't anywhere near the HP levels you are anticipating.
But I like to only do it once.................

The larger shaft was in the 6-speeds but I am unaware if the nv4500 had any shaft size changes.
IIRC its a 1 1/4" shaft stock, and a 1 3/8" for the larger version.
Couldn't hurt while your in there.

I would do the bigger input shaft. My '01 got the 1.375 shaft, so I don't really know where the split is. But this means little to you since this is a 4500 we are talking about, right? Considering you will be spending a couple grand on the clutch, I'd spend a few hundred on the bigger input shaft.
Maybe take a close look at what to do about the 5th gear nut if nothing's been done about it since you'd be in there anyhow.

You could get the NV4500 in the 3rd gens until 03 or 04, so the 94-04 would be for the NV4500. As well, the 99-00 6 speeds had the 1.25" input shaft, so those would use the typical NV4500 clutch. The NV5600 with the 1.375" input started when the 245hp HO engines came out. It is MY 01, but that year started early, which is why its probably labeled as 00.5. NV5600 was used until mid 05, when they switch to the G56 and that takes a different clutch.
Stock input on a 4500 will take what you're looking to dish out. Depends if you have the money to upgrade or not. I did the upgrade with both of mine and don't regret it, its nice to know that you can exceed what you originally anticipated. When I first started modding my 24v, I was thinking 500hp was gonna be more than enough. Once I get my turbo in the spring, I am shooting for around double that. Time will tell if that 650hp rated clutch will hold.
