lift pump questions..
after all the reading i have done on lift pumps and injection pumps going bad i am thinking about trying to change the lift pump with hopes to help prevent the vp44 from going out...on my truck mine is right behind the filter correct? or is it in the tank? i was thinking if its by the motor it might not be too much trouble to just get a new one and replace.??...i need guages really bad but i havent had the extra funds to do that that yet...im tryin to save up some for when this tranny finally gives out..however i dont wanna have to do a vp44 anytime soon either. so do u think this would be a wise choice to repalce the lift pump now?

If you get the Campaign pump form Cummins it comes with a low pressure sensor and wiring and will set a CEL if the pressure gets too low.
You will only have the intank pump if the dealer installed it under warranty.

I would get a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the lift pump. The pump can go out and the injection pump can still pull fuel on its own but not for long before it would die.

I would spend the money on a fuel pressure gauge. It is well wrth the investment if you want to save on IP's. Or go with a boost gauge as they are cheap ($60.00) and also lets you know when the pump craps out as it will show vacuum. I have 324,000 on the original IP and I attribute it to the fuel pressure gauge as I have gone through 4 LP's in its life. YOu may also want to look at the Geno's garage relocation kit. This is also under $100 and makes changing out the LP so much easier. Plus I am pushing 40,000 on the last campaign LP after relocation.

Need to check the lift pump fuel pressure. The same check kit works on GM gassers so most shops or the pal with every kind of tool made should be able to get you a pressure reading at idle. The old R12 install kit w/gauge screws on the test port on the injector pump(under the black cap) , just be sure the R12 valve is closed. Got pics.
