lift pump dying????

My friend's '01 started stumbling today at 40mph. He changed the fuel filter and it didn't want to reprime. After several cycles the canister never did gain any fuel. Another friend kept adding fuel to the canister and with a battery charger to boost the dead batteries it finally cranked. A short road test proved satisfactory, but I still wonder if the lift pump is weak/dead. My old 98.5 had fuel pouring out of the canister on the second cycle with no fuel added when changing the filter. His truck has 100k+ and he is the second owner so the LP may be original.

The odds are that it is dead. If you can get a fuel pressure gauge on ittoo double check, but odds are if it is not filling up the canister then its toast. A cummins dealer has the best price on them

I got my last one at cummins for around $120 (fleet price). Regualarly i think they are around $145. Your friend may want to put some cash aside for an injection pump just in case it decides to die soon. His truck may have been driven with little or no fuel pressure for a while.

The injection pump is the reason I have encouraged him to have the LP checked even though the truck now seems to run ok.

Re:lift pump dying????

You can bet your money that the lift pump is bad. I had a deisel mechanic friend over to give me a hand working on my 99 . After we replaced the filter we tried to fill the canister and we found that the lift pump was not pumping.:'(.. He went into work today and ordered one for my truck.. It is going to run me about $130.00 ... I called the Dodge dealer and they told me that it would cost 225.00 and that it is a restricted part?? What ever that means... ??? Guess I will have to call serve to see what they have to say.

just had mine replaced by the dealer under warranty and was told the same thing (restricted part) I just had to ask and he said that too many are being replaced so they have to have Dodge approval first and THEN they can order one. He said they are not allowed to stock them anymore either.

More BS or is Dodge taking notice?

Re:lift pump dying????

I think that restricted part term means the Dealer has to call in with the VIN number and the techs findings when the vehicle was checked and they send them from the local warehouse on a per vehicle need...

If thats the case I would not be surprised if they start asking for proof fuel filters have been changed so save them parts tickets

Hmmm...Mabey they figure there might be a problem with them

Ran my truck today after the lift pump was replaced and it runs GREAT!!! Now I have to see if t my vin number qualifies for warranty work?? It should be interesting to hear what the dealer says when I ask for reimbursement for warranty work..

n5oxp,
That '01 should be covered by warranty unless it has a lot of miles for an '01.
