KDP really exists on 98.5-00 24v engines too!
Hi guys.
I just wanted to tell you that I took my timing case cover off. There wasn't really any good info, some guys says that they have been killing kdp's on 24v engines too. But I really didn't believe that because usually performance shops says that kdp problems only exists on 12v engines...
Anyway, here is a picture of my kdp on a 110tml 1998.5-1999 24v:
I'm pretty sure now that any 6bt Cummins built before 2001 has a kdp problem.
It looks like that my kdp has come about 1mm out of the case, I felt it with my finger.
That's another myth, I have heard that 24v engines does not get a kdp failure because the lower vibration of the electronic vp44 rotary pump. I think that's fraud as well.
What do you guys think?
Just wanted to tell this to avoid some unneccessary kdp failures...

There are a lot of people who seem convinced that it's only a 12v problem, but I agree that the KDP is definitely a possibility on these trucks all the way up to 2002. It is just plain bad information to suggest that the 98.5-2002 truck owners have nothing to worry about in relation to the kdp.
There is a video on here somewhere of a guy with a 24v that got tore up by the kdp. I also saw somebody post a big kdp related repair bill for a 2002 24v.
I tabbed mine and it was sticking out more than the one on my brother's 12v.
Did you also re-torque and re-loctite the gear housing bolts while you were in there?

I posted about this last year when I did my p-pump conversion. I was one of those that believed it wasn a myth, since I'd never heard of any cases of a 24v having a KDP issue. Also with letters from Cummins saying that the cases were redesigned for the 24v so the KDP wasn't an issue, also a myth. I haven't seen any pics of a 24v case that is redesigned to retain the pin. The 12v cases have been fixed for this issue though.
FWIW, both of the pins in both my trucks were still very tight. The dually had about 370k km on it then, and my 12v had 200k km on it. Staked the 12v, and the dually has the redesigned 12v case so it isn't an issue.

The KDP from the '98.5 perspective
I own a '98.5 24v and I tabbed my KDP while replacing the VP44 (among other things). It's true that the KDP was still in place when I performed this procedure, but it's also true that it could've worked its way loose eventually. Put simply, there was absolutely nothing stopping it from backing out.
Speaking as a '98.5 owner who's spent some real time over and under a 24v CTD RAM, I highly recommend that everyone owning a 24v like mine perform this preventative measure. There's simply too much to loose if you don't.

Some links for the repair:

When I tabbed my pin, I used a gear case cover gasket from a '98 12-vavler. It was a perfect fit, thus eliminating the the RTV sealant between the cover and case.
Cummins bulletin for 12-vavlers. Note the retaining tab part number and picture.

Yes, Dennis, the instructions/photos posted by Barney are very similar to the ones I used. The photo of the KDP tab, for example, shows the exact same part I used for this. I believe your nearest Cummins service center should have all the latest on this particular issue.
*NOTE: remember to use red sealant on the threads of the bolt you use to hold the tab in place!! By the way, I really like Barney's 12v gasket suggestion as well. Good luck to you...

Gee, you'd think Cummins woulda fixed this little problem by now...or, well, up to that point...
Do the Common rails have KDPs? 6.7s? If it aint been fixed yet, someone at Cummins needs to be fired...

It sounds like mine would have the "Stepped" housing. There has to be a better fix than "Use a punch to stake the inside of the dowel pin hole so that the created bur prevents the dowel pin from moving in the gear housing".

Cummins should be able to tell us by the serial off the engine if there is a KDP pin in the engine I would think instead of pull the front cover off to check. I have a 2001 sport

Every truck through '02 needs to be checked.
There is a kit, but I buy the tabs for $1 and a new front seal from Cummins. Add a tube of RTV Ultra Black and it's about $40.
