i think the vp is going south???

well i has been a mild summer and just last week i got up in the mid to uper 90's and the ol cummins got hard to start, having to crank 5-10 sec and sometimes another 5 sec. after that...i first thought it was a fuel leak, but nothin there, so the only other thing i can think of would be the vp goin out, i replaced it about a year and a 1/2 ago at 120k now at 216k i guess it's about time, i just cant afford it right now. i have been running a holley blue with 14psi @ idle and 12 @wot, trough a vulcan draw straw and a homemede 1/2 line kit. but what gets me is no deal pedal and no codes....could it be the mechanical mart of the pump goin and not the elc. or could it be something else, i drive about 700-800mi a week so i dont want go get stranded.

it almost acts like getting air in the system, i will replace the filter when i go out in a little bit but i dont think i will help.

Check the fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump.... sometimes these hoses will crack and not leak fuel, but when the pump runs, it will suck air and make for a hard starting condition.

that would be nice, i'll pull it in the shop tonight and check all the lines and everything. i will be at the state fair next week so i have to have it lined out before then, i thought i was my fuel pressure gauge to start with, so i ordered a new one, and in the mean time i hooked up the low pressure light that came with one of the campaign pumps that i had.

hi there, this sounds similar to a problem I had..
does the wait to start light come on right away or does it come on after you have been cranking for 10 seconds.....My 98 24v would not start last year i had to wait about 15 seconds for the wait to start light to come on and then she'd fire up right away spent hours and hours going over the fuel system electrical, replaced lift pump etc..... truck acted like this for 4 1/2 months had it to a diesel shop, dealership, and private mechanic no codes and no solution was ever found(except the *********** told me I needed a new computer cause they weren't able to flash mine( I told them to pound sand))

I changed fuel suppliers and added some additive and the problem went away after half a tank(I think it was just coincedence). never did figure it out its been fine for almost 2 years???
