Im hearing alot about the lift pump, torque plates, and a few other things. I was wondering if there is some one who would be kind enuff to explain this stuff to me, or if you guys know of any good web sites where I can find this kinda information. Im trying to learn more bout Diesel engines, and engines in general, To help me make more eduacated desicsions on what performance upgrades to buy.

Thanks,

Re:I have some questions!!! Please help

You are definetly in the right place. The lift pump is a low psi fuel pump that brings fuel from the tank to the high psi pump(injection pump). Injection pump needs a adequate supply of fuel(5 to 8 psi min) to lubricate and cool itself. Injection pump builds up psi to get fuel past the injectors, around 3000psi I believe. 12valve and 24 valve use this setup with a VP44 injection pump(2nd gen and 3rd gen I believe) 1st gen trucks are pre-94 I think and have a mechanical fuel injection pump. Which uses a restrictor plate of sorts to regulate fuel timing and volume I believe(don't know much on the older trucks and am just getting the hang of the newer ones). The saving grace here is that if I am wrong, someone will correct me and also you can research each generation and topic by clicking the forums tab at the top of the home page. Everything is indexed by Generation/driveline/non-driveline/performance parst/etc. This is one of the best sites I have found for these trucks and it also offers links to a multitude of other sites for parts, accessories, technical information and just about anything else you may want to know. Hope this helps you some and I hope you make the right choice and go with a cummins powered truck. They really are great and if you need proof visit a junk yard and notice how many other brand name trucks there are compared to Dodge. Dodge has inconviences for the most part but will kepp you going down the road for a long time. I need to be getting a commssion for this.

Just a little info here, before you go asking a lot of question you should take the time to fully describe your truck in your profile. So that guys who are trying to answer your question know the year, model, any add ons, ect. Welcome to the site.

Not to be pickey, but you are wrong on an important point and I'm sure you'd prefer to have your facts straight:

12V Cummins engines have a mechanical injector pump, referred to as a Bosche P7100. These pumps are excellent and should be good for over a million miles. They are oil cooled. As well, they can run on a variety of fuels including diesel, kerosene, avaition fuel and a few others.

24V have the Bosche VP44 which is electronically controlled by the trucks ECM. The VP44 is far less reliable that the P7100 and is cooled by the fuel. They can only run on #1 or #2 diesel.

1 st gens have a Bosche VE pump (I think) as well. This pump is a rotary pump while the 2 other ones are inline. I believe that the injector pump on the first gens is one of the weaker components on the truck.

Sam,

Its kinda hard to explain about EVERYTHING...the post would go on for pages....spend some time reading 24V drivetrain & non-drivetrain and then begin to ask some questions on the things you are unclear on.

Re:I have some questions!!! Please help

DR.Evil, after being spoofed on some of my earlier comments in other posts I went back to my research and figured out where in history I wa going wrong. Think I got it now and your right about wanting to be corrected when needed. I hate giving out bad info and will stcik to topics I know or do additional research when needed. I have worked on cats, volvopintas, stewart stevens, Isotta fraschinis and waukeshaws(spelling) for the navy. Again let me say that I mainly work on the controls and monitoring equipment but when the enginemen are short handed I have always been the first to get dirty with them. Guess thatis when I decided thta gas was out and diesel was in. Just kinda fell in love with the sounds and smells. Had to get one for tinkering on at home. My father-in-law has a 93 dually and he wouldn't give it to me, so I had to get my own. I hope that explains what a rookie is doing getting all confused between the mechanical pumps and the electrical ones. Just trying or wanting to be as helpful as I can and sometimes that dosn't always produce quality answers. Will strive to do better if the future. Thanks again for the pick-me up and getting the right information out. Fox is going back to the drawing board.
