Thumbs up I have the answer for crankcase ventilation

I've had my CTD for about 5 weeks now and the smell of diesel was always present so I did research and read what everyone else was doing and came up with my own ,and better solution.I am hoping to have pics up and the product available for purchase if the demand is enough.Basically it consists of an aluminum cylindrical catch can,3 ft of extension hose off the breather,a small k&n filter, and a single bolt ,it is drainable and very breathable, since Ive installed it the smell of diesel has been completely absent in the cab and It should be known that I live in N Illinios and the truck usually idles warming up for 40 minutes aday .Let me know if any one is interested and I hope to have pics by tomorrow

Idles 40minutes a day????

I certainly hope you change your oil VERy often, and that much idling in cold weather will wash the cylinders in no time at all.

I was gonna say that too.....yikes....

Invest in an exhaust brake....will allow your engine to warm up much quicker and puts a load on which helps with extended idling....

it idles for 20 min in the morning before an hour drive on the expressway to work and another 15-20 before I leave work headed for home so it sounded worse than it actually was

Dang.... when I don't have a chance to plug in, I idle mine for 5 minutes or so (mines been reflashed to idle at 1200 under cold conditions). I put the tranny in netural, set the p-brake and let her idle for 5 min. or so and then take off gently down the road. No heavy throttle action until it comes up to operating temps (which is pretty fast when going down the road).

If I do plug it in, then I start it up, let it idle for a minute or so and take off. Everyone I have talked to (including the Cummins tech at the local Cummins dealer) says that letting these engines idle cold is about the worst thing you can do to them.

The days of idelling diesels for hours on end are long gone.....at one time it was thought that it wasnt harmful....but now its a definite......

That may be the reason you have so much diesel smell.

Hi danimal 95,

I am interested in seeing what you have come up with for the crankcase ventilation system. I seldom have a problem with the odor, but I would like to see what you have, when you get some pictures of it.

Thanks,

Tom

Pics will be up tomorrow afternoon,as well as the cost to build each one which should be very reasonable. Also it should be know that I am a tech in one of the premier speed shops in the midwest so any work I do is no other than top quality. If any one is interested in checking out what we do as well as my other car go to www.ls1speed.com then go to shop cars mine is the white cobra and for entertainment, on the main page you can download a short clip of my car doing a 1000 ft burnout down a ruway

I know that website very well. Went looking for prices on exhaust and intake for my dad's vette. For some reason, your page won't work.

would your kit also eliminate the breather bottle drip/spray that some people experience as well?

I dont personally have any noticeable fumes (or at least none that I notice or care about ) but even after extending the hose my breather still pukes a decent amount of oil.

Only other options Im aware of are the relocation of the tube to near the starter (complicated), or a fleetguard kit (dont personally know much about it but John_P posted on it awhile ago)

If your kit addressed the blow-by drip Id definately be interested
