i bought the truck with a full banks power pack and im thing about up grading to a tst pm3 chip what modle should i get. the one for 98.5-00 or the 01

Dirty I called a Turbo company that advertises here the other day, inquiring about turbos. I told him I had a 99, so he kept telling me I had a HY turbo. I kept telling him that I had a HX35W. He said there was no way, that Chrysler didn't put those on in those years. If your turbo plate says HX 35W, then get the box that works with that turbo. just tell who ever you order it from that you have the HX 35W. Look at your plate to make sure. Weld you waste gate shut & enjoy the added boost you get. It is amazing what you get with no box or nothing added to it. This does not seem very popular for some reason but my truck has almost 290K miles on it. I am about to go to a bigger turbo though, I need to reduce egt's. Good luck.

dirty,
If you have rear drum brakes you have an 01, if you have rear disk brakes you have an 01.5.
It doesn't make a difference if you have an HX or HY for the TST. The reason for the distinction between 98.5-00 and 01-02 is because of the map sensor connection. In 01 Cummins used a slightly different connector. The TST harness is a direct plug in for both. You just have to pick the right one for your model year.
I'm thinking he doesn't actually mean weld it. Along with the TST you should get a boost elbow from them. It will screw into your compressor housing on the wastegate hose. It will have a set screw in it, which you will use to adjust your boost once you get everything squared away. By totally closing off(welding) the wastegate you could create more boost than the HX35 is capable of and end up creating a hot air charge (not good) and ultimately overspinning the charger and causing premature failure.
I believe Holset meant to simplify things when they named their chargers.... for a charger that has a maximum efficient boost of 35psi = HX35, 40psi = HX40??? Makes sense.
I have family on Oahu. If they knew what a diesel was I would send them to help you, but they are too busy layin' on the beach!

If I recall the 01's and the 02's came with an hy35 if equipped with an auto and if they came with a standard trans they came with the hx35. It is quite possible that a previous owner swapped in an hx or even something like a PDR HX35 to go along with the Banks system. I am not all that familair with Banks systems but I seem to recall that some of thier systems included an upgraded turbo.
As stated by a previous poster the only difference between the years for the boxes should be the map sensor plug configuration and not have anything to do with the specific turbo.

barryg i know the orginal owner of the truck pretty well and he told me nothing was down to the turbo besides the quick spool houseing so the truck came with the hx from the factory
hey thanks guys for sharing you imput

Dirty at the back of the adjusting arm, where it is attached to the swiveling little piece of flat bar, just do you a good tack weld there. It doesn't take much to hold it. I don't care what any of the Genious's on here say, if you have never tried this, don't knock it. I have over 288,000 miles on this truck & only replaced a turbo one time & that was because an exhaust valve busted & went thru the turbo. Cummins sent me a brand spanking new turbo that got tacked before I put it on. This takes the need for a boost fooler out of the equation. Try it, you will like it. Just tack it enough to immobilize it. I can at anytime go back with the brush of a grinder knock the weld off & be stock again. You can do it the same way. I can build 32 lbs of boost with my comp off. So that is just the Injectors & turbo working.
Also since you have an 01 with drums, take that piece of junk wheel cylinder out & replace it with this NAPA # 37337. This will give you about twice the wheel cylinder size you have now & should improve your back braking performance. No mods needed to use it. It will bolt right up. It is a 1 ton Chevy wheel cylinder. Good Luck.

So would you call it a failure or off the chain advice ? Egt"s are gonna go up because more boost requires more fuel which makes more heat. It did what it was supposed to do, but don't let anyone else know our secret. Mine have hit 1500, if I was not paying attention. I am about to go to a bigger turbo though, because I want to get better use of my boost. 35 psi is fine for the HX 35. If you were to add some more power gadgets, you will go even higher psi. I have seen as high as 47 PSI onmy HX35, even though there are those on here who say they wn't do it. They will, over & over too. Good Luck.

It might do it but, It's outside its design window and is delivering a hotter air charge.
You are right to go with a bigger turbo with a higher design pressure.
