Hows everyones 6speed
I have found from my neighbours freind on his 02 he is on his third transmission. He told me two of his freinds are going through the same prolbem. Trans had been making growling noises at about 50 miles an hour. He took it in to the dealership and they pulled the drain plug out to check the oil and found a whole bunch of brass filings mixed with the oil. When they pulled the transmission apart for inspection, they found the spacers in the transmission, destroying themselves and the main shaft with horrendos wear. My own 6 has no prolbems no noise at 45000 miles seam fine? The people I have been talking about are still on warra ???nty and not pulling any loads? ???

Re:Hows everyones 6speed
Can you get any more details of what happened? I've heard the endplay in some 5600's was set too loosely from the factory, not too concerned but mine is a bit growly when coasting down in 5th gear or idling along in 1st.

Re:Hows everyones 6speed
I'm on my second NV 5600 and the trans was filled with filing plus I lost both gears for 6th.
They tried to fix it and never did get it right so they replaced it.
From day one I could never get it into reverse easy, notchey to 3rd and then 6th failed.
The new trans shifts much better and reverse is smooth, it is still a bit notchey to 4th but I will see how it goes with a few more miles on it.

Re:Hows everyones 6speed
I've got 8500 miles on mine - about 35% of that towing our 24 ft 5th wheel - many Sierra grades - absolutely NO problems or complaints - it IS pretty normal for a certain degree of gear noise or "rumble" at idle with these trannies due to all the gears and internal mass of rotating components...

They are NOT at all similar to the 6 speed trannies in Corvettes and such - they are TRUCK transmissions, and need a certain degree of respect and leisure during shifts to allow gears to syncronize - try consistent speedshifting and drag racing, and you can expect lots of expensive problems...

Almost 18,000 miles on mine with no complaints. I drive the interstate highways with the cruise set on 75 MPH in 6th gear pulling a 7,200 # (empty) horse trailer and love it. It is great to climb grades without slowing or needing to downshift.

Steve

65,000 miles so far no problems!!! Of course, I drain mine approx. every 20,000 miles or so, with Redline MTL? Don't believe in extended service etc. or Mopar oil .

Steve

133,000 and no problems with lots of pulling 5k to 15k on original fluid. My dad had ~80k on his when he lost input shaft bearing and 5th gear syncro's. His was very noisy from the get go. He pulls 12k every week for 10 months of the year.

8500 miles and A-OK. Pulled my first +8000 lbs. load yesterday. Transmission actually shifted better after 200 miles up through the mountains, when hot.
I changed out the cheesy Texaco MS 9224 spec oil at 4000 miles and replaced it with Redline MTL. That stopped an occasional grind from 2nd to 3rd when cold, and cut down on the "notchies". No rumbling, no noise.
I have an e-mail from the chief engineer at Redline stating that MTL exceeds the 9224 spec and is superior to the Pennzoil or Texaco lubes, along with a technical breakdown as to why. My lawyer says that's good enough.
I also have an e-mail from an engineer at the NVG plant in Muncie, Indiana, where the NV5600 is manufactured. He states that in the '02 model year, there was a "materials change" in the synchros. The new synchros are harder and less brittle for increased durability, but they shift a little rougher and require a little more care.

I have a friend that runs a hot-shot business and he has 4 trucks with the 6spd tranny over 130k. Pulls a dual tandem 30ft G/N trailer with them. He said he loved the 6spd and would never go back to a 5spd.
DM01
